Zhōulǐ 周禮

The Rites of Zhōu, with Zhèng Xuán’s annotation and Lù Démíng’s phonetic gloss

by 鄭玄 (注) · 陸德明 (音義)

About the work

The Sìbù cóngkān 四部叢刊 (SBCK) edition of the Zhōulǐ in twelve juan, carrying Zhèng Xuán’s 鄭玄 (127–200) Eastern-Hàn annotation (zhù 注) together with the phonetic and exegetical glosses (yīnyì 音義) extracted from Lù Démíng’s 陸德明 (ca. 550–630) Jīngdiǎn shìwén 經典釋文. This is the canonical layered presentation of the Zhōulǐ (KR1d0001) without the Táng zhèngyì 正義 of Jiǎ Gōngyàn 賈公彥 — which forms the further layer in KR1d0003 Zhōulǐ zhùshū 周禮注疏.

The SBCK edition reproduces a Sòng-printed exemplar in the Hànfēnlóu 涵芬樓 collection. The text is divided in six sections (the six guān 官 ministries: Tiānguān, Dìguān, Chūnguān, Xiàguān, Qiūguān, and the Kǎogōngjì substituting for the lost Dōngguān), each split into upper and lower juan, for twelve juan total. There is no tíyào 提要 in the SBCK frontmatter — only a brief table of contents.

Abstract

Zhèng Xuán’s Zhōulǐ zhù is the foundational layer of all subsequent Zhōulǐ scholarship. Composed in Gāomì 高密 (Shāndōng) during Zhèng’s later Eastern-Hàn retirement, it weaves together earlier Hàn glossatorial traditions (especially those of Zhèng Zhòng 鄭眾, “Hòu Zhèng” 後鄭, of the Eastern Hàn — distinguished from the qián Zhèng 前鄭, Zhèng Xīng 鄭興, the father) with Zhèng Xuán’s own systematic explication. Zhèng’s note is the principal evidence for the meanings of the technical official titles, ritual implements, and ceremonial vocabulary of the Zhōulǐ; it has never been superseded.

Lù Démíng’s Jīngdiǎn shìwén (composed before 583, presented under the Suí) supplies pronunciation glosses (yīn 音), philological notes on variant readings, and excerpts from earlier commentators whose works were already lost in his time (e.g., Mǎ Róng 馬融, Wáng Sù 王肅, Gàn Bǎo 干寶). The Jīngdiǎn shìwén portion devoted to the Zhōulǐ is one juan; in the SBCK presentation it is dispersed and embedded as interlinear note material.

For the further Táng zhèngyì layer added by Jiǎ Gōngyàn, see KR1d0003. For the standalone Táng zhèngyì, see KR1d0003 which is the Wényuāngé Sìkù version. For other base recensions of the canonical text, compare KR1d0001.

Translations and research

The Zhèng-Lù layered text underlies the standard scholarly editions and translations cited at KR1d0001. There is no separate translation tradition for the SBCK edition as such; it is consulted as one of the textual witnesses for any critical edition of the Zhōulǐ (alongside the Sòng monograph editions, the Yuán Yú-shì 余氏 print, and the Ruǎn Yuán 阮元 Shísān jīng zhùshū 1815 collation).
