Jízhù sāngfú jīngzhuàn 集注喪服經傳
Collected Annotation on the Mourning-Dress Classic and Tradition
by 裴松之 (撰)
About the work
A single-juàn reconstruction of 裴松之 Péi Sōngzhī’s (372–451) lost Jízhù sāngfú jīngzhuàn 集注喪服經傳 — a collected-annotation commentary on the canonical Yílǐ-Sāngfú and its zhuàn. Péi Sōngzhī is principally known to standard history as the author of the Sānguó zhì zhù 三國志注 (the indispensable Liù-cháo commentary on Chén Shòu’s Sānguó zhì, KR2c0001), but his ritual scholarship is substantial. The CHANT reconstruction (CH2e1093) is drawn from Dù Yòu 杜佑’s Tōngdiǎn 通典 citations.
Abstract
The opening preserved fragment glosses the canonical dà-gōng protocol: dà-gōng bù-cuī cháng, mǔ-má dié-yīng, bù dài 大功布衰裳、牡麻絰纓、布帶 — i.e. the cloth-cut mourning-dress, male-hemp head-and-loin bands, cloth girdle. The collected-annotation form (jí-zhù 集注) shows Péi Sōngzhī’s characteristic methodology: a base-text of canonical Sāngfú materials, then collected glosses drawn from Hàn-Wèi-Jìn ritual authorities (Zhèng Xuán, Wáng Sù, Dù Yù, Hè Xún) with Péi Sōngzhī’s own judgement-comments.
The substantive content covers:
(i) The dà-gōng (nine-month) protocol with collected annotations from prior authorities.
(ii) Mourning-grade transitions — particularly the dà-gōng to xiǎo-gōng downgrade and the conditions under which it may be triggered.
(iii) Female-line and post-marriage mourning rulings.
The dating bracket (372–451) reflects Péi Sōngzhī’s documented lifespan in Sòng shū 64.
The CHANT-listed title 集注喪服經傳 — also borne by KR1d0089 Sāngfú jīngzhuàn (Kǒng Lún 孔倫) in CH2e1089 — is one of two same-title works in the corpus; Péi Sōngzhī’s version (CH2e1093) is later and more substantive in its synthesis of the prior Hàn-Wèi-Jìn annotation traditions.

Other points of interest
The collected-annotation (jí-zhù) format Péi Sōngzhī applied to the Sāngfú — a base-text plus surveyed prior glosses plus the editor’s own judgement — is identical in method to his Sānguó zhì zhù approach, confirming the unity of his scholarly practice across history-classics and ritual-classics. The Sāngfú jí-zhù represents the Liú-Sòng court-ritual moment when prior Hàn-Wèi-Jìn Sāngfú scholarship was being systematically organized into a unified canonical reference.
