Lǐjì Liú-shì yīn 禮記劉氏音

Master Liú’s Phonological Commentary on the Lǐjì

by 劉昌宗 (撰)

About the work

A single-juàn reconstruction of 劉昌宗 Liú Chāngzōng’s lost Lǐjì Liú-shì yīn 禮記劉氏音 — the companion to his much more extensive parallel KR1d0112 Zhōulǐ Liú-shì yīn. The CHANT reconstruction (CH2e1105) is drawn from Lù Démíng 陸德明’s Jīngdiǎn shìwén 經典釋文 and Dīng Dù 丁度’s Sòng-period Jíyùn 集韻 citations.

Abstract

The opening preserved fragment is from <Tángōng shàng> 檀弓上: “ěr wú cóng-cóng ěr” 爾毋從從爾 with cóng glossed cù-cōng qiē 徂聰切 in fǎn-qiè — citation from Jíyùn shàng-píng-shēng yī-dōng cóng-zì zhù (Jíyùn upper-level-tone first-dōng rhyme, cóng-character annotation).

The Sòng-period Jíyùn cross-citation is significant: it confirms that Liú Chāngzōng’s phonological apparatus to the Lǐjì — like his parallel Zhōulǐ apparatus — remained an active reference for Sòng rhyme-dictionary compilers four hundred years after composition.

The substantive content covers the canonical 49-piān Lǐjì with characteristic Liú Chāngzōng fǎn-qiè readings, often cited as alternative-to-Xú Miǎo and alternative-to-Lǐ Guǐ readings.

The dating bracket (317–419) reflects the broad Eastern-Jìn span; Liú Chāngzōng’s exact lifespan is not preserved.

Other points of interest

The pairing of 劉昌宗’s KR1d0112 Zhōulǐ Liú-shì yīn (2 juàn) and the present Lǐjì Liú-shì yīn (1 juàn) — both showing the Jíyùn Sòng-cross-citation — confirms his standing as the second principal Eastern-Jìn-period systematic phonological commentator on the Sānlǐ alongside 徐邈 Xú Miǎo.
