Ěryǎ Xiè-shì yīn 爾雅謝氏音

Master Xiè’s Phonological Commentary on the Ěryǎ by 謝嶠 (撰)

About the work

A modern reconstruction of 謝嶠 Xiè Qiáo’s lost Ěryǎ yīn 爾雅音 — the third of the Liáng triplet of Ěryǎ phonological commentaries, with Gù Yěwáng KR1j0094 and Shī Qián KR1j0095. Suí shū jīngjí zhì 隋書‧經籍志 records the work in two juàn; lost by the Sòng. CHANT reconstruction CH2f1206 draws from Lù Démíng’s Jīngdiǎn shìwén 經典釋文.

Abstract

The Xiè-shì yīn is the lightest-attested of the three Liáng Ěryǎ phonological commentaries; the surviving fragments are short fǎn-qiè spellings, often cited by Lù Démíng jointly with one or both of the other Liáng commentators. The first preserved entries from 〈Shìgǔ 釋詁〉 include: yáng-guān 洋、觀 → yīn guān 音官 (cited “Shìwén refers to Gù and Xiè”); 尼 → dìng 定; 尼 → yáng-ér fǎn 羊而反.

The frequency of joint-citation (Gù-Xiè 顧、謝; Shī-Xiè 施、謝) suggests that the three Liáng yīn — though independently composed — circulated together as a paired reference set, in the same way that Sūn-Guō 孫郭 (Sūn Yán + Guō Pú) functioned for the earlier Wèi-Jìn layer.

Dating bracket (500–557) follows the Liáng-dynasty span; no internal dating evidence in the surviving fragments.

Other points of interest

The Liáng triplet Gù-Shī-Xiè — coordinated phonological re-reading of the Ěryǎ in the mid-sixth century — is one of the principal lost sources behind Lù Démíng’s Ěryǎ shìwén and so a critical filter for any reconstruction of the Ěryǎ reading-tradition before the Suí Qièyùn synthesis.
