Wénzì jí lüè 文字集略
Compact Compilation on Graphs by 阮孝緒 (撰)
About the work
A modern reconstruction of 阮孝緒 Ruǎn Xiàoxù’s lost Wénzì jí lüè 文字集略, the Liáng-period bibliographer-recluse’s character glossary. Ruǎn Xiàoxù — better known as the compiler of the Qīlù 七錄 (“Seven Records”) bibliography that underlies the Suí shū jīngjí zhì classification system — also produced this short xiǎoxué compilation; the Suí shū jīngjí zhì records the Wénzì jí lüè in six juàn; lost by the Sòng. The CHANT reconstruction (CH2f1219) draws principally from Buddhist yīnyì literature (the Yīqièjīng yīnyì of Shì Xuányìng / Huìlín, the Fó běn-xíng jí jīng yīnyì 佛本行集經音義).
Abstract
The Wénzì jí lüè is a compact compilation in the strict sense — a short paraphrastic glossary of difficult graphs, selected for practical reading rather than for paleographic comprehensiveness.
Representative entries: jiǎn 瞼 = “yǎn-wài pí yě 眼外皮也, the outer eyelid” (cited via Shì Xuányìng’s Yuè-dēng sān-mèi jīng yīnyì 月燈三昧經音義); míng-xiāng 名相 = “zhào-mù yě 詔目也, the listing of names” (cited from the Fó běn-xíng jí jīng yīnyì, where the gloss appears as a citation from the parallel-title Zì lüè 字略 KR1j0108 of 宋世良 Sòng Shìliáng).
The note in the source — that the Fó běn-xíng jí jīng yīnyì citation appears under the title Zì lüè rather than Wénzì jí lüè — is the principal textual-bibliographic problem of the surviving fragments: the abbreviated title Zì lüè in Táng Buddhist yīnyì potentially refers either to Ruǎn Xiàoxù’s Wénzì jí lüè or to Sòng Shìliáng’s separate Northern-Wèi Zì lüè KR1j0108, and CHANT preserves both attributions while noting the conflict.
Dating bracket (502–536): Ruǎn Xiàoxù’s documented adulthood (he died in 536); the Qīlù preface dates to 523, anchoring his mature scholarly period.

Other points of interest
The shared abbreviated-title problem with Sòng Shìliáng’s KR1j0108 Zì lüè is methodologically instructive: it shows the limits of Táng-period yīnyì citation as a reconstruction source, where two pre-Suí works with overlapping titles cannot always be disentangled. The CHANT editor’s decision to preserve both attributions rather than silently assign each fragment to a single work is the correct philological response.
