About the work
A modern reconstruction of an anonymous Xiǎoxué piān 小學篇 — a Six-Dynasties character primer in the Cāngjié / Jíjiù tradition. The title — “Primer of Xiǎoxué” — refers explicitly to the bibliographic category itself, and the work is one of the principal practical xiǎoxué primers of the Northern dynasties. Suí shū jīngjí zhì 隋書‧經籍志 records the work (anonymously) in one juàn; lost in the Sòng. The CHANT reconstruction (CH2f1217) draws principally from Buddhist yīnyì literature (Shì Xuányìng 釋元應’s Yīqièjīng yīnyì 一切經音義 with extensive Vinaya and treatise citations), from 顏之推’s Yánshì jiāxùn ‧ Shū-zhèng 顏氏家訓‧書證, and from the Táng-period Běi-hù lù 北戶錄.
Abstract
The Xiǎoxué piān is the only attested primer in the pre-Suí xiǎoxué corpus to bear the title 小學 (rather than the more usual 字書, 字林, 字統, 字略, 字統, 字典 etc. titles) — a self-conscious naming that aligns the work directly with the Sìkù bibliographic category as it would later be formalized.
Representative entries: bì 篦 = “shuā yě 刷也, comb-and-brush” (cited from Shì Xuányìng’s yīnyì on the Vinaya Sì-fēn lǜ 19, Sēng-qí lǜ 34, the Chéng-shí lùn 4, and the Fó běn-xíng zàn jīng 4 — a typical clustered Buddhist attestation); zhèn 陣 (cited in 顏之推’s Yánshì jiāxùn ‧ Shū-zhèng); wù-jīng 芴菁 (cited from Běi-hù lù).
The work is anonymous: no author is preserved in any catalog, and the CHANT reconstruction does not assign one. The northern-dynasties dating is conventional, based on the Buddhist yīnyì citation pattern and the early Táng reception in Yánshì jiāxùn and Běi-hù lù.
The work has no relation to Zhū Xī 朱熹’s late-Sòng Xiǎoxué 小學 (an ethics-and-ritual primer in the Neo-Confucian curriculum); the two share only the generic title.
Dating bracket (386–581): the broad Six-Dynasties northern span. The Yánshì jiāxùn citation supplies a terminus ante quem.

Other points of interest
The unique self-reflexive title — a work about xiǎoxué called Xiǎoxué piān — points to a moment in pre-Suí intellectual history when the bibliographic category and the practical primer-genre converged in title. The naming is not repeated until KR1j0089 Duàn Yùcái’s 段玉裁 explicit Qīng programme some twelve centuries later.
