About the work
A tiny fragment of a local geographic record of the Nánkāng 南康 region (modern southern Jiangxi, centered on Ganzhou). The work is attributed to Dèng Démíng 鄧德明 of the Liu Song dynasty, active in the Yuánjia 元嘉 reign period (424–453 CE). Only one passage survives in the Kanripo text.
Abstract
The single surviving passage describes a mountain in Nankang named Guīyì Shān 歸義山 (Mountain of Returning Allegiance), seven hundred lǐ from the county seat. At its foot there is a stone fortress (石城) several zhàng high, looking from a distance “precipitous and soaring, its spiritual gateways ascending into the sky; the local elders call it the Divine Gateway (神闕).” The passage is one of the many brief topographic notes on remote mountain fortresses and legendary features that characterize the genre of Southern Dynasties provincial geographic records. Nankang Commandery 南康郡 was a Han-period administrative unit in the upper Gan River valley; the commandery seat was at modern Ganzhou in Jiangxi.
