Yù dìng nèizé yǎn yì 御定內則衍義

Imperial-Approved Extension of the Meaning of the Nèizé imperially commissioned by 世祖 (Shùnzhì, 1638–1661, 清, 御定); compiled by 傅以漸 (Fù Yǐjiàn, 1609–1665, 清, 奉敕纂)

About the work

A 16-juan imperial extension of the Nèi zé 內則 chapter of the Lǐjì (the canonical chapter on women’s-quarters ritual and conduct), commissioned by Shùnzhì in Shùnzhì 13 (1656) and compiled by the first Qīng zhuàngyuán Fù Yǐjiàn. The work parallels the contemporary Yù dìng zīzhèng yào lǎn (KR3a0101) — Shùnzhì’s parallel imperial-pedagogical project — and pairs with the later Yù dìng xiào jīng yǎn yì (KR3a0105) in the ShùnzhìKāngxī imperial yǎnyì canon-formation. The work covers women’s-quarters ritual, household management, child-rearing, and the broader ethical universe of imperial-court female life — drawing classical citations from the Lǐjì, Shī, Shū, Lǚshì lǐjīng, and historical exemplars from Liènǚ zhuàn tradition.

Abstract

The Yù dìng nèizé yǎn yì is one of the principal Qīng imperial-women’s pedagogical works, complementing the earlier Empress Xú of Míng’s Nèi xùn (KR3a0076). Composition: precisely datable to Shùnzhì 13 (1656). The frontmatter brackets to 1656–1656.

The substantive structure follows the yǎnyì tradition. The work was designed as an imperial-court manual but with broader provincial distribution. Its 16-juan scale makes it more compact than the Yù dìng xiào jīng yǎn yì’s 100 juan but more detailed than Empress Xú’s 1-juan Nèi xùn.
