Sī biàn lù jí yào 思辨錄輯要

The Essential Selection from the Records of Thought-and-Discrimination parent work by 陸世儀 (Lù Shìyí, hào Fútíng 桴亭, 1611–1672, 清, 撰); abridged-and-arranged by 張伯行 (Zhāng Bóxíng, 1651–1725, 清, 編次)

About the work

A 35-juan abridged-and-arranged version (by the early-Qīng publisher-scholar Zhāng Bóxíng of the Zhèng yì táng) of Lù Shìyí’s Sī biàn lù 思辨錄 — Lù’s foundational yǔlù-style work of moral-philosophical reflection. Lù was one of the Sān dà rú (Three Great Confucians) of the early-Qīng yímín generation, alongside Lǐ Yóng and Sūn Qíféng; his Sī biàn lù was composed during his Míng-loyalist retreat. Zhāng Bóxíng’s editorial work — undertaken at the Zhèng yì táng publishing-house — selected and re-arranged Lù’s materials into the present 35-juan systematic form, which became the standard transmission. The original Sī biàn lù was longer and less systematically organised.

Abstract

The Sī biàn lù jí yào is the principal Qīng-period preservation of Lù Shìyí’s mature thought. The composition window has two layers: (i) Lù Shìyí’s original composition spanning his retired-life period from the late Míng / early Qīng (ca. 1640–1672); (ii) Zhāng Bóxíng’s editorial arrangement at the Zhèng yì táng in his Sūzhōu period (ca. 1707). The frontmatter brackets to ca. 1640–1707.

The substantive content places Lù as a major yímín generation Confucian, with positions overlapping but distinct from the contemporary Sūn Qíféng (KR3a0023 editor) and Lǐ Yóng. Zhāng Bóxíng’s editorial role made the work standard reading in the early-Qīng Zhūzǐxué curriculum.

The bibliographic record: SKQS Zǐbù — Rújiā lèi; Zhèng yì táng quán shū 正誼堂全書 (Zhāng Bóxíng’s collected publications).
