Qù fá lùn 去伐論

Discourse on Eschewing Self-Boasting by 孫毓 (Sūn Yù, fl. late 3rd century, 晉)

About the work

A very short Western Jìn 西晉 moral-philosophical essay by the ritualist and classicist Sūn Yù 孫毓 (governor of Chángshā 長沙太守 under the Jìn). Preserved as a single brief fragment in 《藝文類聚》. Not in the Sìkù quánshū; sourced from CHANT (CH2a1384).

Abstract

The Qù fá lùn survives only as an Yìwén lèijù extract of about fifty lines, but the topic is conventional: an admonition against the cardinal Confucian fault of self-praise ( 伐 — “to vaunt one’s merit”), framed by appeals to the Lúnyǔ and the Lǐjì. Sūn Yù was a substantial classicist — the Suí shū jīngjí zhì records his Máo shī yì wèn 毛詩異問 and Lǐ jì zhù 禮記注 — and is regularly cited in Tōng diǎn 通典 for ritual opinion on mourning grades. The composition window is bracketed by his Western Jìn career. The received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.
