Shìyào lùn 世要論

Discourse on the Essentials of the Age by 桓範 (Huán Fàn, ?–249, 魏)

About the work

A lost CáoWèi 曹魏 political-philosophical treatise by Huán Fàn 桓範 (also cited as Shì lùn 世論 or, in some early Táng sources, Huánfàn shìyào lùn). Reconstructed from quotations in 《意林》, 《太平御覽》, 《北堂書鈔》, 《初學記》 and Lǐ Shàn’s 《文選》 commentary on Liú Xiàobiāo’s Biànmìng lùn 辨命論, Wáng Sēngdá’s 王僧達 Hé Lángyé Wáng yī gǔ shī, and Lù Jī’s Jié kè shào nián chǎng xíng 結客少年場行. Abstract

Huán Fàn was a senior Wèi statesman who served Cáo Cāo and his Wèi successors as Court Gentleman (尚書), Cavalier Attendant-in-Ordinary (散騎常侍), and Grand Master of Splendid Happiness (大鴻臚). His biography is in Sānguó zhì 三國志 j. 9 (曹爽傳附桓範傳, with Péi Sōngzhī’s substantial zhù) — and his death in 249 is among the most famous events of the WèiJìn transition: he was executed with Cáo Shuǎng 曹爽 by the Sīmǎ faction in the coup of that year. The Shìyào lùn was his major prose work — a comprehensive Wèi-period treatise on rulership and governance, presented as a series of lùn on specific topics. The Suí shū jīngjí zhì lists it in 12 juàn; only fragments survive. The surviving content covers the duties of the ruler, the qualities of ministers, the discrimination of talent, the deployment of xíng 刑 and 德, and military strategy. It is one of the most substantively political -house texts of the Wèi period. The death date of 249 anchors the upper end of the composition window; the received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.
