Dǔ lùn 篤論
Sincere Discourse by 杜恕 (Dù Shù, c. 198–252, 魏)
About the work
The companion zǐ-house treatise to Dù Shù’s 杜恕 KR3a0120 Tǐlùn 體論. Reconstructed from quotations in 《意林》, 《太平御覽》, 《藝文類聚》 and from Péi Sōngzhī’s Sānguó zhì commentary (Wèizhì běnzhuàn). Not in the Sìkù quánshū; sourced from CHANT (CH2a1469). At over a thousand lines of citation it is one of the larger jíyì reconstructions in this KR3a zǐ-house cluster.
Abstract
The Dǔlùn is a substantial Wèi-period political-philosophical treatise of the same idiom and orientation as the Tǐlùn: a series of lùn on specific topics — the conduct of office, the proper deployment of xíng 刑 and dé 德, the discrimination of talent, the moral basis of military command, and the management of the xíngshì 形勢 of empire. The longest surviving block of fragments comes from the Yìlín of Mǎ Zǒng 馬總. The Suí shū jīngjí zhì lists the Dǔlùn in 4 juàn; only fragments survive. The two works (Tǐlùn and Dǔlùn) are sometimes conflated in early Sòng catalogs, and a small number of fragments are claimed by both reconstructions — but the modern jíyì compilations keep them separate. The author’s identity, dating, and his lineage (son of Dù Jī, father of Dù Yù) are treated under 杜恕; the composition window is bracketed by his Wèi career. The received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.
Translations and research
No substantial dedicated secondary literature located in Western languages. The standard fragment-compilation is 嚴可均 Quán sān guó wén 全三國文 j. 42, which preserves the largest single block of Dù Shù prose.
