Péi Shǐ xīnyán 裴氏新言
The New Sayings of Master Péi by 裴玄 (Péi Xuán, fl. mid 3rd century, 吳)
About the work
A lost SūnWú 孫吳 zǐbù treatise by Péi Xuán 裴玄 (sometimes spelled 裴元 in Sòng catalogs, under the Sòng yuán 玄→元 taboo). Reconstructed from quotations in 《北堂書鈔》, 《埤雅》, 《太平御覽》, 《淮南子》 sub-commentary, 《藝文類聚》, and Lǐ Shàn’s commentary on Yáng Hù’s 《讓開府表》 in Wén xuǎn. Not in the Sìkù quánshū; sourced from CHANT (CH2a1471).
Abstract
Péi Xuán was a Wú-period official from Pèiguó 沛國 — described in Sānguó zhì commentary as the father of Péi Jùn 裴儁 — who served under Sūn Quán. The Xīnyán (also cited as Péishǐ xīnshū 裴氏新書 in some early Táng sources) survives as a small body of fragments — natural-history observations, classical aphorisms, and short reflective pieces. The work is most often encountered in the Yìlín and Tàipíng yùlǎn tradition. The Suí shū jīngjí zhì lists the Xīnyán under the Wú period. The composition window follows Péi Xuán’s Wú-period career; the received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.
