Xīnyì 新義

New Meanings by an anonymous Jìn-period author (闕名)

About the work

A very short jíyì compilation of an anonymous Jìn-period zǐbù text titled Xīnyì 新義. The surviving citations — perhaps fifty lines in total — are drawn from 《北堂書鈔》, 《太平御覽》 and 《藝文類聚》. Not in the Sìkù quánshū; sourced from CHANT (CH2a1474).

Abstract

The Xīnyì is one of several Jìn-period -house titles that survive in the early bibliographic record without secure attribution to a known author. The Suí shū jīngjí zhì 隋書經籍志 lists a Jìn-period Xīnyì in 5 juàn under the zǐbù — but supplies no author and no further description. Sòng catalogs preserve the title only as already very fragmentary. The few surviving citations are short moral and political aphorisms, with no programmatic structure now recoverable. Some traditional bibliographers tentatively attach the work to one of the lesser-known Jìn commentators on the Lǎozǐ — but no secure identification is supported. The date-bracket here is the Jìn period (265–420). The received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.
