Mài Guàn 脈貫

The Pulse Threaded Together by 王賢 (Wáng Xián, Xuéyuān 學淵, fl. Kāngxī, 清)

About the work

A nine-juan early-Kāngxī pulse synthesis by Wáng Xián. The book title — guàn = “threaded through” — names its central project: integrating the entire received pulse-doctrinal heritage into a single continuous exposition. The juan structure proceeds from foundational definitions and the Nèijīng pulse-theoretic framework (juan 1), through pulse-position and method (juan 2–3), the twenty-eight pulse types (juan 4–5), pulse-by-disease correlations (juan 6–7), and pulse-prognosis (juan 8–9). The work cites — and where necessary corrects — Wáng Shūhé KR3eb011, Cuī Jiāyàn KR3eb025, Huá Shòu KR3eb023, Lǐ Shízhēn KR3eb014 / KR3eb019, Lǐ Zhōngzǐ KR3eb020, Lǐ Yángāng KR3eb018, and Zhāng Lù KR3eb022.

Prefaces

KR3eb034_000.txt carries the author’s preface and KR3eb034_001.txt onwards the body. The preface is dated, on internal references, to Kāngxī xīnmǎo 康熙辛卯 = 1711, with subsidiary references to Kāngxī gēngyín 康熙庚寅 = 1710 indicating the manuscript was completed in 1710 and prefaced for printing in 1711.

Abstract

Wáng Xián 王賢 (字 學淵, 號 筆林 Bǐlín) was an early-Kāngxī physician of Yùtián 玉田 (Hèběi) — though some bibliographic records place him in Húběi. He is otherwise lightly documented; no CBDB record. The Mài guàn is his principal surviving work and one of the more comprehensive single-author early-Qing pulse syntheses, comparable in scope to Lǐ Yángāng’s ten-juan KR3eb018 Mài jué huì biàn (1664–66) but more conservative in its approach (where Lǐ Yángāng demolishes the pseudo-Mài jué line by line, Wáng Xián incorporates the polemic as background and focuses on positive exposition). The book was reprinted several times in the late Qing.

The conventional dating of 1711 follows the internal preface evidence; the catalog meta records 清 dynasty.
