Chóng Dìng Shí Xíng Fú Yīn Chú Yán 重訂時行伏陰芻言
Revised Modest Words on the Seasonal Latent-Yīn Disorder by 田宗漢 (Tián Zōnghàn, zì Yúnchá 雲槎, fl. mid-19th c., 清), revised in Republican period
About the work
A two-juan revised re-edition of the original Shí xíng fú yīn lùn 時行伏陰論 by Tián Zōnghàn (字 雲槎), a Qing physician active in the mid-19th century. The work concerns the differential diagnosis of a syndrome — shí xíng fú yīn 時行伏陰 (“seasonal latent yīn disorder”) — that the author argues has been routinely misdiagnosed as cholera (huò luàn 霍亂), with disastrous clinical consequences when the appropriate cold-cooling treatment for cholera is given to a patient whose underlying pattern is yīn-cold-stagnation. The author’s own preface emphasises that the symptom-complex superficially resembles cholera but is fundamentally a yīn fú 陰伏 (latent yīn) pattern requiring opposite treatment.
Prefaces
KR3eb042_000.txt carries the editorial preface noting that the original was obtained from a friend’s collection in 甲寅年 = 1854 (the original date) and is being re-edited in Mínguó shíyī nián 民國十一年 = 1922. The original work and the editorial reissue are conventionally dated 1854 / 1922 respectively; the dating bracket notBefore: 1854 / notAfter: 1922 reflects this composite chronology.
Abstract
Tián Zōnghàn 田宗漢 (字 雲槎 Yúnchá) was an obscure mid-19th-century physician whose contribution rests entirely on this single short treatise. The doctrinal claim — that the cholera-pandemic-era misdiagnosis of fú yīn as huò luàn killed large numbers of patients through inappropriate cold treatment — is consequential and historically interesting; it places the work in dialogue with the larger Qing epidemiological debate about the huò luàn pandemics of the 1820s, 1840s, and 1860s. The 1922 republication reflects the continuing clinical relevance of the differential during the Republican-period plague seasons.
