Léi Gōng Páozhì Yàoxìng Jiě 雷公炮製藥性解

Léi Gōng’s Drug-Processing Methods, with an Explanation of Drug Properties by 李中梓 (Lǐ Zhōngzǐ, Shìcái 士材, 1588–1655, 明), building on the legacy of 雷敩 (Léi Xiào, fl. 5th c., Liú-Sòng)

About the work

The Léi Gōng páozhì yàoxìng jiě is Lǐ Zhōngzǐ’s late-Míng synthesis of two complementary domains of pharmacological knowledge: (a) drug processing (páozhì 炮製) in the tradition of Léi Xiào 雷敩’s lost Léi Gōng páozhì lùn 雷公炮炙論 of the Liú-Sòng (5th c.), and (b) the Yìshuǐ-Dōngyuán pharmacological theory of drug properties (yàoxìng 藥性). The work is in 6 juǎn and organises drugs by category, presenting for each substance: (i) Lǐ’s brief discussion of its qìwèi and channel-entry (歸經), (ii) the traditional Léi-Gōng processing method, (iii) Lǐ’s annotations on clinical use.

The “Léi Gōng” of the title refers to the legendary Yellow-Emperor-era Léi Gōng 雷公 (the Sùwèn’s interlocutor with Huángdì), conventionally taken as the inventor of drug processing. The actual textual ancestor is the Léi Gōng páozhì lùn (雷公炮炙論) attributed to Léi Xiào of the Liú-Sòng — a 5th-century páozhì manual now surviving only in fragments preserved in the Zhènglèi běncǎo tradition. Lǐ Zhōngzǐ’s Yàoxìng jiě synthesises this páozhì legacy with the Yìshuǐ-Dōngyuán doctrinal pharmacology of Lǐ Gǎo, Wáng Hàogǔ, and Lǐ’s own teacher Yáng Yīxù 楊一隅.

Prefaces

The 漢學文典 transmitted text preserves Lǐ Zhōngzǐ’s own preface, which dates the work’s composition probably to the 1620s–1640s. He explains that páozhì (processing — including alcohol-roasting, vinegar-roasting, salt-roasting, honey-roasting, mineral-stewing, etc.) is essential to drug efficacy and that pharmacology without processing is incomplete; he therefore unites the two traditions.

Abstract

For Lǐ Zhōngzǐ’s biographical background see KR3ec027. The dating range in frontmatter (1622–1655) covers the plausible composition window from Lǐ’s early career through to his death.

The work is significant as one of the principal late-Míng systematisations of the páozhì tradition, and as a clinical pharmacology paired with practical processing guidance. It served as a reference standard for Húīzhōu and Jiāngnán pharmacies through the late-Míng and Qīng. The 雷敩 attribution in title is conventional — the actual páozhì doctrines were updated by Lǐ to match Míng practice.
