Běn Jīng Féng Yuán 本經逢原

Returning to the Source of the Original Canon by 張璐 (Zhāng Lù, Lùyǔ 路玉, hào Shíwán lǎorén 石頑老人, 1617–1700, 清)

About the work

The Běn jīng féng yuán is the late-17th-century pharmacological exegesis by Zhāng Lù — one of the three founding fathers of the Qīng Yīzōng (medical-lineage) school alongside Yù Chāng 喻昌 and Lǐ Zhōngzǐ 李中梓. Completed in Kāngxī 34 (1695), the work organises substances by the Gāngmù-derived classification but with a self-conscious return to Běnjīng (神農本草經) categories as the authoritative source — hence the title “Returning to the Origin of the Canon”. Each substance entry gives the Běnjīng core text followed by Zhāng’s clinical commentary integrating Lǐ Shízhēn 李時珍, Miù Xīyōng 繆希雍, the Yìshuǐ-Dōngyuán tradition, and Zhāng’s own clinical observation.

The work was widely used as a Qīng clinical reference and is the immediate ancestor of Yáo Qiú’s 姚球 Běncǎo jīng jiě (KR3ec044). Zhāng Lù’s broader works include the Yīzōng tì miàn 醫宗弟子問 / Yīzōng huì miàn and the Zhāng shì yī tōng 張氏醫通, the latter being the most influential Qīng general internal-medicine reference.

Prefaces

The transmitted text preserves Zhāng’s autograph preface (date 康熙三十四年 = 1695) and editorial fán lì.

Abstract

Zhāng Lù (張璐, 1617–1700) — see his existing person note. The Běn jīng féng yuán is part of Zhāng’s program to re-anchor Qīng clinical practice in the canonical pre-Sòng pharmacology, against what he saw as the over-elaboration of Gāngmù-tradition citation pharmacology. It is the principal late-17th-century kǎojù-inclined pharmacology.
