Zhēnjiǔ jiéyào 針灸節要
Essential Excerpts of Acupuncture and Moxibustion by 高武 Gāo Wǔ (撰)
About the work
A three-juan early-Jiājìng abridgement of the Nèijīng-Nànjīng acupuncture doctrine, compiled by 高武 Gāo Wǔ of Sìmíng 四明 and printed in Zhèngdé 14 (1519). This is the earliest of Gāo Wǔ’s three acupuncture works — the others being the Zhēnjiǔ jùyīng (KR3ee014, 1529) and the Zhēnjiǔ Sù Nàn yàozhǐ (KR3ee021, 1537). The Jiéyào selects the acupuncture-relevant passages from the Sùwèn, Língshū, and Nànjīng, organizes them topically (rather than by their original chapter-sequence), and provides minimal editorial connective prose. Gāo’s stated method in the Jùyīng preface — “to recover the goodness of the methods that the ancients established” (古人立法之善) — is here applied for the first time: the Jiéyào is the source-text restoration on which the later Jùyīng (comparative-critical compendium) and Yàozhǐ (topical synthesis) build.
Abstract
The substantive content of the work can be reconstructed from Gāo Wǔ’s preface in KR3ee014 (which describes the Jiéyào programme) and from 黃易 Huáng Yì’s 1537 preface to KR3ee021 (which gives the Jiéyào its place in Gāo’s acupuncture trilogy). The work is registered in the Sìkù quánshū zǒngmù tíyào cúnmù under Zǐbù · Yījiā lèi; the SKQS compilers note that the Jiéyào “is the earliest of Gāo Wǔ’s three acupuncture works and the methodological foundation for the Jùyīng” (在《聚英》之先). The work survives in a Zhèngdé block-print and several Míng-Qīng recensions.
