Zhēnjiǔ féngyuán 針灸逢源
Acupuncture and Moxibustion Encountering the Source by 李學川 Lǐ Xuéchuān (撰)
About the work
A six-juan late-Qīng acupuncture compendium by 李學川 Lǐ Xuéchuān (zì Sānyuán 三源, hào Lǐchéng 鄰澄), of Wúxiàn 吳縣 (Sūzhōu), prefaced in Jiāqìng 20 (1815). The work opens with a “supplementary printing” of the Sùwèn with annotated commentary (續刻素問經文補遺), beginning with the Màiyào jīngwēi lùn 脈要精微論 — Lǐ inserts the omitted Sùwèn passages from later imperial editions and provides his own interlinear gloss. The body of the work treats the channel-trajectories, acupoints, indications, and Lǐ’s clinical case-records, anchored throughout in the Sùwèn-Língshū-Nànjīng canon (the “Source” of the title). The Zhēnjiǔ féngyuán is the most theoretically rigorous of the Qīng acupuncture handbooks and is the principal late-Qīng source for the integrated channel-and-formulary clinical method that would feed into the Republican-period TCM reconstitution.
Abstract
The Zhēnjiǔ féngyuán is one of the principal late-Qīng acupuncture works (alongside 廖潤鴻 Liào Rùnhóng’s Zhēnjiǔ jíchéng KR3ee007) and was widely used in the Jiāqìng / Dàoguāng period. Lǐ Xuéchuān’s editorial ambition is to restore the canonical Sùwèn-Língshū-Nànjīng root-doctrine that he sees as having decayed in the Yīzōng jīnjiàn (KR3ee015)-dominated Qīng curriculum; this is the “encountering the source” (逢源) of the title. The work consolidates 361 acupoints, distinguishes the 14 channels in the standard post-Huá Shòu form (KR3ee026), and integrates Lǐ’s own pharmacological prescriptions for each clinical syndrome.
