Shānghán xún yuán 傷寒尋源
Tracking the Source of Cold Damage by 呂震名 (Lǚ Zhènmíng, zì Yǒngyuán 永元, hào Wàngzhāi 望齋, 1799–1858, 清)
About the work
A three-juan late-Qīng (1856) Shānghán commentary by the Hángzhōu physician 呂震名 Lǚ Zhènmíng (1799–1858). The work — characteristically titled “Tracking the Source” — is in the Chángshā fùgǔ (ancient-text-restoration) line of 方有執 Fāng Yǒuzhí and 喻昌 Yú Chāng but with the more synthetic and harmonizing approach typical of Dàoguāng-Xiánfēng-period clinical writing.
Abstract
Composition date 1856 is given by Lǚ’s preface (Xiánfēng 6). Lǚ was jǔrén of 1822, holding minor official appointments in Zhèjiāng. He turned to medicine in mid-career and wrote the Xún yuán as a contribution to the late-Qīng Shānghán synthesis movement. The work is preserved in modest 19th-century prints and was reprinted in early Republican anthologies.
