Shānghán mínglǐ lùn 傷寒明理論
Treatise on Elucidating the Principles of Cold Damage by 成無己 (Chéng Wúyǐ, b. ca. 1063, fl. into 1156, 金)
About the work
A four-juan companion treatise to 成無己 Chéng Wúyǐ’s annotated Shānghán lùn (KR3ef005), presenting in original-essay form the doctrinal apparatus implicit in his commentary. The work — three juan plus an appended Lùn fāng 論方 fourth juan — is the first sustained Chinese systematic exposition of Shānghán clinical doctrine in essay (rather than commentary) form, and was central to the JīnYuán Shānghán curriculum.
Abstract
The composition date 1156 is given by 嚴器之 Yán Qìzhī’s preface (Shàoxīng 26), the principal early biographical witness to Chéng. The three principal juan are organized as fifty entries each addressing one Shānghán-relevant clinical-doctrinal topic (e.g. fārè 發熱 fever, zhānyǔ 譫語 delirious speech, biàn 便 elimination). The appended Lùn fāng fourth juan presents 20 of the principal Shānghán canonical formulas with detailed pharmacological-doctrinal analysis. Together with the Zhù jiě Shānghán lùn (KR3ef005), the Mínglǐ lùn constitutes Chéng’s unified commentary-and-treatise program on the Shānghán canon. Chéng’s catalog meta dynasty is given as 宋 here (correctly indicating the work was issued under Jīn-controlled territory in the Sòng calendar tradition); see 成無己 for the contextual note.
