Shānghán kuò yào 傷寒括要

Concise Essentials of Cold Damage by 李中梓 (Lǐ Zhōngzǐ, Shìcái 士材, hào Niànzé 念莪, 1588–1655, 明)

About the work

A two-juan late-Míng (1649) pedagogical compendium on Shānghán clinical practice by the influential Jiāngsū physician 李中梓 Lǐ Zhōngzǐ (字 Shìcái 士材, 1588–1655). The work is a concise practical guide rather than a textual commentary — Lǐ summarizes the Shānghán canon’s clinical doctrine in a form suitable for student use, with selected formulas, prognostic indicators, and clinical adjustments. The catalog meta gives 明 dynasty (correctly: composed in the last decade of the Míng before the dynasty’s fall).

Abstract

Composition date 1649 is given by Lǐ’s preface; the work was first printed in 1649 (Shùnzhì 6, in the early Qīng dynasty by which time the Míng had fallen). Lǐ is one of the most influential late-Míng pedagogical medical writers; his other works — the Yī zōng bì dú 醫宗必讀 (1637), the Nèijīng zhī yào 內經知要 (KR3ea033), the Běncǎo tōng xuán 本草通玄 — were repeatedly reprinted through the Qīng and shaped the early-Qīng pedagogical medicine landscape. The Shānghán kuò yào situates Lǐ’s Shānghán thinking within his broader pedagogical program.
