Shānghán dà bái 傷寒大白

Plain Exposition of Cold Damage by 秦之楨 (Qín Zhīzhēn, Huángshì 皇士, fl. early Kāngxī, 清)

About the work

A four-juan early-Kāngxī (1714) pedagogical commentary on the Shānghán lùn by the Sūzhōu physician 秦之楨 Qín Zhīzhēn (字 Huángshì 皇士). The title’s metaphor — “great whiteness” 大白 = plainness / clarity — signals the author’s intent to present the Shānghán canon in fully transparent form, without doctrinal accretions or polemical complications.

Abstract

Composition date 1714 (Kāngxī 53) given by Qín’s preface. Qín presents the Shānghán materials in a streamlined sequence, with clear syndrome-headers, brief commentary, and selected canonical formulas. The work was widely used pedagogically in the mid-Qīng and continued to be reprinted into the early Republican era. Qín is a representative figure of the moderate Kāngxī pedagogical tradition, situated between the strict revisionists (喻昌 Yú Chāng) and the literati-physicians (尤怡 Yóu Yí).
