About the work
A one-juan late-Qīng tabulated handbook of Shānghán syndrome-discrimination by the Jīngyì 涇邑 (Jīngxiàn 涇縣, Ānhuī) physician 包誠 Bāo Chéng (字 Xīngyán 興言). The work — its principal innovation is the tabulated format (biǎo 表) — re-presents 黃元御 (Huáng Yuányù)‘s Shānghán xuán jiě 傷寒懸解 in chart form, with the canonical syndrome-clauses, pulse signs, and prescriptions arranged in a unified grid that “證狀畢呈如掌如貌” (presents the entire array of syndrome-features at a glance, as on the palm of the hand).
Abstract
Composition date 1870, given by the preface — “同治九年歲在庚午冬十有二月朔” (Tóngzhì 9 / 1870, twelfth-month new-moon) by 李瀚章 Lǐ Hànzhāng of Héféi (合肥), then governor-general of Húguǎng (督楚使者). Lǐ — the elder brother of 李鴻章 Lǐ Hóngzhāng — records that Bāo Chéng called upon him while serving in a clerical post 鄂中 (in Húběi), expounded Huáng Yuányù’s doctrine at length, and presented this Shěn zhèng biǎo “均依黃氏編第者一冊” (entirely organized according to Huáng’s editorial schema) and asked Lǐ to fund its block-printing. Lǐ — keen to provide medical relief to the war-stricken populace of post-Tàipíng Húběi — wrote the preface and underwrote the printing.
A second preface (序傷寒論一書晉時已無善本…) gives the textual-historical rationale: the Shānghán lùn had been rearranged by 王叔和 Wáng Shūhé in the Jìn period, redacted by 林億 Lín Yì in the Sòng Jiàozhèng Yī shū jú 校正醫書局 collation, and obscured by the accumulation of conflicting commentaries; Huáng Yuányù’s Xuán jiě restored the canonical sequence; Bāo’s Shěn zhèng biǎo makes Huáng’s restoration accessible to the working clinician.
The work is one of the principal vehicles of the Huáng Yuányù 黃元御 school in the late Qīng — its only well-known transmission outside Sìchuān and Shāndōng — and an important document of late-Qīng provincial medical patronage.

Other points of interest
The preface by 李瀚章 Lǐ Hànzhāng (1821–1899) is an unusually distinguished example of late-Qīng official patronage of medical publishing: Lǐ was at this time governor-general of Húběi–Húnán (Húguǎng zǒngdū 湖廣總督) and the elder brother of the more famous 李鴻章 Lǐ Hóngzhāng. The preface records Lǐ’s explicit linkage of medical relief to the post-Tàipíng reconstruction project (“致治之術與良醫治疾將無同”).
