About the work

A late-Qīng treatise on latent pathogens (fúxié 伏邪) — the broad category encompassing all warm-disease conditions caused by pathogens that have laid dormant within the body for some period before manifesting clinically. The work is one of the principal late-Qīng monographs on the fúqì / fúxié doctrinal tradition that goes back to the Nèijīng dictum “winter injury by cold produces warm-disease in spring” 冬傷於寒,春必溫病, and that was developed in the Qīng period particularly by 柳寶詒 Liǔ Bǎoyí (Wēnrè féngyuán KR3eg003).

Abstract

Liǔ Bǎoyí’s Wēnrè féngyuán explicitly references and engages with Liú Jírén’s Fúxié piān 伏邪篇 in its middle juǎn — confirming the work’s late-Qīng circulation and its visibility within the latent-pathogen current. The text systematically distinguishes the principal sub-categories of latent-pathogen disease: cold-injured latent-pathogen emerging as warm-disease (spring); summer-heat latent-pathogen emerging as latent summer-heat (fúshǔ 伏暑) in autumn; damp latent-pathogen; and others. For each, Liú expounds the Nèijīng and Shānghán doctrinal background, the diagnostic markers, and the prescription apparatus.

The work was preserved in the Sānsān yīshū 三三醫書 collectanea (裘慶元 Qiū Qìngyún, 1924), which is the principal transmission channel for the cluster of late-Qīng latent-pathogen monographs (Liǔ Bǎoyí, Liú Jírén, 蔣樹杞 Jiǎng Shùqǐ).

Dating is approximate. Liú’s lifedates are not preserved (see 劉吉人 person note); the work is conventionally dated to the late Qīng on textual grounds.
