Qiūnüè zhǐnán 秋瘧指南
A Guide to Autumn-Malaria by 林天佑 (Lín Tiānyòu, 民國)
About the work
A Republican-era clinical handbook on autumn-malaria (qiūnüè 秋瘧), in 1 juǎn. The work belongs to the seasonal-disorder clinical-primer genre exemplified by 雷豐 Léi Fēng’s Shíbìng lùn (KR3eg002) but focused specifically on autumn-onset malarial presentations. The title zhǐnán 指南 (“compass / guide”) is the standard Chinese-medical clinical-handbook formula (cf. 婁傑 Lóu Jié’s Wēnbìng zhǐnán KR3eg007, 鄭全望 Zhèng Quánwàng’s Zhàngnüè zhǐnán KR3eg038).
Abstract
Malaria (nüè 瘧 / nüèjí 瘧疾) was endemic across much of late-imperial and Republican China, with autumn as one of the seasonal peaks (the so-called qiūnüè presentation, typically with intermittent fevers — Falciparum or vivax malaria). The Qīng wēnbìng / Shānghán tradition treats malarial fevers as either shàoyáng presentations (per Shānghán lùn) or as fúshǔ 伏暑 (latent summer-heat) presentations (per wēnbìng).
Lín’s handbook presents the practical apparatus for autumn-malaria diagnosis and treatment. Dating is approximate. Author lifedates not preserved.
