Inner-Palace Secretly-Transmitted Clinical Experience in Gynecology by 龔廷賢 (Gōng Tíngxián = Gōng Zǐcái = Yúnlín Shānrén, 1522–1619, late Míng)
About the work
A three-juǎn gynecology compendium attributed to the major late-Míng physician-publisher Gōng Tíngxián 龔廷賢 of Jīnxī 金谿 (Jiāngxī). The work is structured as a numbered series of lùn 論 (case-treatises) on common gynecological conditions, beginning with yuèjīng qiánqī lùn 月經前期論 (1), yuèjīng hòuqī lùn 月經後期論 (2), and proceeding through menstrual disorders, bēnglòu 崩漏, dàixià 帶下, qiúzǐ 求子, tāiqián 胎前, chǎnhòu 產後, and fùrén zábìng 婦人雜病. Each entry combines a brief symptomatic description with an étiological gloss and one or two prescribed formulas given with full drug compositions and dosages. The title Nèifǔ mìchuán jīngyàn — “Inner-Palace secretly-transmitted clinical experience” — reflects Gōng Tíngxián’s brief tenure at the Tàiyīyuàn 太醫院 as lìmù 吏目 (clerk) during the Wànlì reign and his strategic literary use of imperial-court medical-knowledge prestige.
Prefaces
The KR hxwd recension carries no separable preface; the text begins directly with the Yuèjīng qiánqī lùn heading. The “Nèifǔ mìchuán” framing is internal to the work’s title.
Abstract
Gōng Tíngxián (1522–1619, see 龔廷賢) was the most prolific late-Míng physician-publisher and the principal vehicle for the dissemination of Míng clinical doctrine in popular print. His major works — the 萬病回春 Wànbìng huíchūn (1587) and 壽世保元 Shòushì bǎoyuán (1615) — were among the most reprinted Chinese medical texts of the late Míng. The Nèifǔ mìchuán jīngyàn nǚkē is one of his series of specialised compilations targeting specific medical sub-fields (gynecology, paediatrics, shānghán, etc.) issued under his Yùnlínshānrén 雲林山人 imprint. The dating: Gōng’s medical-publishing career began in the 1580s and continued to his death (traditionally 1619); the gynecology compilation is best bracketed within this range, with notBefore 1580 / notAfter 1619.
Doctrinally the work applies the standard late-Míng 李東垣 Lǐ Dōngyuán Bǔzhōng yìqì tāng spleen-stomach framework combined with the 朱丹溪 Zhū Dānxī Xiāoyáo sǎn / Sìwù tāng liver-blood framework. The Tiáojīng wán 調經丸 (Menstrual-Regulating Pill), Zǐjīn wán 紫金丸 (Purple-Gold Pill), and Huángqín sǎn 黃芩散 are prescribed as central formulas. The work’s formulary closely overlaps that of Gōng’s Shòushì bǎoyuán gynecology section, suggesting the Nèifǔ mìchuán nǚkē was extracted, reorganised, and re-published from his larger encyclopedias for specialised circulation. This kind of editorial re-presentation of his own material under different titles was a signature feature of Gōng’s commercial publishing strategy.
The text circulated in late Míng and Qīng popular medical book markets in multiple imprints and survives in numerous editions; the hxwd recension is one of the Qīng popular reprints preserved in overseas Chinese-medicine library holdings.

Other points of interest
The “Nèifǔ mìchuán” (“Secretly transmitted from the inner [imperial] court”) framing is itself a piece of late-Míng commercial publishing strategy: it claims privileged imperial-medical access for a work whose contents in fact draw on a broader Sòng-Yuán-Míng synthesis. Comparable Gōng titles include Tàiyī shēnxiào shíèr fēngbàngbēi yīxué and various other works styled with imperial-medical prestige markers. The phenomenon is a key example of late-Míng commercial medical publishing’s use of court-prestige branding.
