About the work
A four-juǎn paediatric treatise by 萬全 Wàn Quán (1499–1582, hào Mìzhāi 密齋), third-generation inheritor of the Wàn-family medical practice of Luótián 羅田 in Húběi. The work systematically expounds the principles of paediatric pathology and therapy along 錢乙 Qián Yǐ zàngfǔ lines, organising disorders by the Five Phases (gānbìng 肝病, xīnbìng 心病, píbìng 脾病, fèibìng 肺病, shènbìng 腎病). It functions as the theoretical companion to the author’s earlier clinical handbook Yùyīng jiāmì 育嬰家秘 (KR3ej043) — as Wàn’s own preface explains, Jiāmì preserves the family’s prescriptions while Fāhuī “elaborates the underlying ideas” (fāmíng jiāmì zhī yíyì 發明家秘之遺意), so that learners can grasp the yì 意 (clinical reasoning) and not merely the fǎ 法 (formulary). The work circulated widely in the Jiāng-Huái, Jiāngnán, Mǐn-Yuè, and Wú-Yuè regions during the late Míng and became one of the most-cited paediatric reference works of the Míng-Qīng period.
Prefaces
The author’s own preface opens with a meditation on Heaven’s compassion and the parent’s anxious concern for the infant body, then traces the Wàn family’s medical genealogy: grandfather 萬蘭 Wàn Lán (hào Xìngchéng 杏城翁) of Yùzhāng 豫章 (“first generation”) died young; father 萬筱齋 Wàn Xiǎozhāi (hào Júxuān 菊軒翁) inherited the practice and in the Chénghuà gēngzǐ year (1480) settled at Luótián, where he married a Chén woman and fathered the author (“second generation”); Wàn Quán himself trained with the local Confucian scholars 張玉泉 Zhāng Yùquán and 胡柳溪 Hú Liǔxī, then compiled the family’s transmitted teachings — collecting what had been scattered, supplying what had been deficient, pruning what was overgrown, and correcting errors — into the Yùyīng jiāmì 育嬰家秘. He notes with regret that none of his ten sons proved able to continue the practice, and that the Fāhuī was therefore written to make the underlying theory transmissible to disciples outside the lineage.
Abstract
The Yòukē fāhuī is one of the principal paediatric works of the Wàn-Mìzhāi medical lineage and a foundational text of mid-to-late-Míng paediatric scholarship. Internal evidence dates it to after the Yùyīng jiāmì and before the author’s death in 1582; conventional dating places it in the Jiājìng to Wànlì transition, c. 1549–1579. The jicheng.tw recension here transmitted is in four juǎn — juǎn 1 (preface and general principles of infant care, bǎoyīng 保嬰), juǎn 2 (Five Phase pathology, especially gānbìng and xīnbìng), juǎn 3 (píbìng, fèibìng, shènbìng), and juǎn 4 (specific clinical entities including jīngfēng 驚風 convulsive seizures, gān 疳 chronic malnutrition syndromes, xièlì 瀉痢 diarrhoea-dysentery, and a substantial dòuzhěn 痘疹 smallpox-and-eruptive-fevers section). Wàn frames paediatric pathology in a Qián Yǐ zàngfǔ model with characteristic family modifications: cooling and clearing for the over-heating xīn-gān organs of the child, supplementing for the constitutionally weak pí-shèn organs. The Wàn family lineage and its publications — Yùyīng jiāmì 育嬰家秘 (KR3ej043), Piànyù xīnshū 片玉心書 (KR3ej044), Dòuzhěn xīnfǎ 痘疹心法 (KR3ej066) — are described by Hinrichs and Barnes (2013) as the most significant family-line paediatric tradition of late-imperial China.
