About the work

A Republican-era philological reconstruction of an underground Qīng-period folk-surgical lineage known as the “thirteen formulae” tradition. Zhāng Juérén, of Guǎnghàn 廣漢 (Sìchuān), obtained a Xiánfēng 5 (1855) manuscript transcript from a Chóngqìng book stall in 1939 and worked on it intermittently before finalising the present edited compilation in Mínguó 37 (January 1948). The catalog meta places the work in the Míng — apparently following the folk tradition that traces the thirteen-formula lineage back to Huáng Chénghào’s 黃承昊 Zhégōng mànlù 折肱漫錄 (Chóngzhēn 8 / 1635) — but the received text is a 1948 Republican-era publication, and the dynasty field is corrected accordingly.

Abstract

The opening zhǔyán 囑言 attributed to the tradition’s ancestor frames the work as a transmission of sì wèi yì yào 四味異藥 (four marvellous ingredients) and shísān qí fāng 十三奇方 (thirteen marvellous formulae) designed to cure intractable abscesses when “all physicians stand baffled.” Zhāng cites Huáng Chénghào’s Zhégōng mànlù (1635) juǎn 7 to argue that this tradition was already standard external-medicine knowledge in the late Míng — combined with the Xiānfāng huómìng yǐn 仙方活命飲 — and predates the Qīng. Zhāng’s own family-lineage account credits the late-Qiánlóng Tàiyīyuàn head Zhāng Yúnháng 張雲航 with receiving the formulae from a Daoist at Lónghǔshān 龍虎山; the tradition was thereafter transmitted exclusively within the Zhāng lineage until the Dàoguāng / Xiánfēng era.

The work has two main parts: the Shàng biān 上編 (“general discussion”) is a theoretical synthesis on yōngjū with yīnyáng typology, the wǔ shàn qī è prognostic schema, and liù qì qī qíng aetiology, in mnemonic verse with prose commentary; the Xià biān 下編 (the body of the work) gives detailed monographs on each of the thirteen named formulae: zhōngjiǔ wán 中九丸, jīngōng wán 金蚣丸, sānxiāng wán 三香丸, huàròu gāo 化肉膏, yàoxiàn 藥線, zǐxiāo dìng-zi 紫霄錠子, qiānchuí zhǐ 千捶紙, tàisuì mò 太歲墨, dàizhēn sǎn 代針散, xūnxǐ tāng 薰洗湯, tiānrán sǎn 天然散, Mǎliáng gāo 馬良膏, and jiědú gāo 解毒膏 — each with sourcing, ingredients, alchemical preparation, and indications.

Zhāng’s philological apparatus is unusually rigorous for a Republican-era medical compilation: his prefaces document the manuscript chain, list textual variants, and indicate which formulae have been clinically verified by Zhāng himself. The work is consequently of methodological interest as a rare twentieth-century waike compilation that systematically text-critically recovers a lost Qīng folk-medical lineage.

The thirteen-formula tradition is one of the few underground Qīng folk-medical lineages for which a substantial documentary reconstruction has been attempted; Zhāng’s manuscript-tracking work is exemplary of mid-20th-century zhōngyī textual scholarship before the PRC TCM-college era. The catalog dynasty meta 明 is a residue of the folk-lineage’s late-Míng anchor in Huáng Chénghào and should be read as a tradition-claim rather than a recension date.
