Yānhóu mìjí 咽喉秘集

Secret Collection on Throat and Larynx attributed to “Zhāng Sòngliáng” 張宋良 (almost certainly a typographic slip for 張宗良 Zhāng Zōngliáng of KR3em024 Hóukē zhǐzhǎng) with a “Mistress / Master Wú” 吳氏 named jointly in the catalog.

About the work

A single-juǎn Qīng laryngology compendium covering the standard mid-Qīng “Zhāng-school” doctrinal architecture: a zǒnglùn 總論 (general theory) restating the yīyīn yīyáng jié ér wéi bì 一陰一陽結而為痹 framework from the Nèijīng, a six-pulse diagnostic schema mapping the laryngology to the cùnguānchǐ 寸關尺 pulse-positions on both wrists, a fēnjīng 分經 anatomical division of the throat into channels, and the systematic application of liùwèi tāng 六味湯 加減 as universal base prescription. This is followed by a clinical typology of named conditions (single, double, rosary-string rǔé 乳蛾, chánhóu fēng 纏喉風, hóubì 喉閉, etc.) and a formulary of insufflation powders, decoctions, and external dressings — including the jiédú zǐjīn dān 結毒紫金丹, bóhé tāng 薄荷湯, huíxuě fāng 迴雪方, and the yágān fāng 牙疳方.

Prefaces

The witness preserves no preface; the text opens directly with the zǒnglùn.

Abstract

The catalog meta records two authors: 張宋良 and 吳氏 (“Mistress / Master Wú”, anonymous within a clan). The orthography 張宋良 is preserved in the present frontmatter per cataloging convention, but is almost certainly a Qīng-period typographic slip for the well-attested 張宗良 Zhāng Zōngliáng ( Liúxiān 留仙) of Sūzhōu, author of KR3em024 Hóukē zhǐzhǎng (preface 1757). The internal doctrinal apparatus of the present text — the six-flavour-decoction architecture (六味湯加減), the right-hand-pulse mapping to fèifēng 肺風 / fèifúhán 肺伏寒, the left-hand-pulse mapping to xīnhuǒ 心火 / shènxū huǒyán 腎虛火炎, the explicit liùwèi tāng universal-base strategy — is essentially identical to that of Hóukē zhǐzhǎng, and modern Chinese specialist scholarship (cf. 耿鑒庭 et al.) treats the two works as products of the same author and lineage. The Wú-clan 吳氏 attribution may reflect a co-transmitter or family relative responsible for the redaction of the present recension; no individual biographical detail attaches to this co-attribution and, following standard convention, no separate person note has been created for the anonymous 吳氏 collaborator.

The composition window is set to 1700–1800 — broadly congruent with the 1757 preface of KR3em024 and allowing for the Yānhóu mìjí’s recension to have been finalized within the same Qián-lóng-era working life of Zhāng Zōngliáng. The catalog meta gives only “清” without finer dating.

Translations and research

  • No standalone Western-language translation located.
  • The work’s relationship to KR3em024 Hóukē zhǐzhǎng is briefly discussed in 耿鑒庭, Zhōngguó zhōngyī hóukē fāzhǎn shǐ 中國中醫喉科發展史, in the chapter on the Zhāng-clan laryngology lineage.
  • Modern reprint via the Hǎiwài huíliú zhōngyī shànběn gǔjí cóngshū 海外回流中醫善本古籍叢書.

Other points of interest

The doctrinal twinning of Yānhóu mìjí with KR3em024 Hóukē zhǐzhǎng — same author (under orthographic variant), same therapeutic system, same characteristic phraseology — makes the pair an instructive specimen of late-imperial intra-lineage textual proliferation: one major systematic monograph (Hóukē zhǐzhǎng) and a one-juǎn compact handbook (Yānhóu mìjí) co-existing for different clinical and pedagogical uses within the same family practice.
