About the work
The Sìkù quánshū 四庫全書 recension of the Xù míngyī lèiàn — Wèi Zhīxiù’s great mid-Qīng casebook anthology described in detail in KR3ep017. The Sìkù edition is shorter and more rigorously edited than the longer hxwd recension preserved as KR3ep017: it runs to 36 juǎn against the longer recension’s 60, the editorial cuts effected by the imperial editors in the course of admission to the Sìkù quánshū in the 1770s–1780s (the Sìkù collection was completed in 1782). Editorial differences between the two recensions are extensively documented in modern Chinese reference works.
This entry is paired with KR3ep017 (the longer non-Sìkù recension). The two are catalogued separately because they represent meaningfully different textual states of the work. The composition window 1745–1782 reflects Wèi’s lifetime work-period as lower bound and the Sìkù completion date as upper bound.

The substantive text appears in the parallel KR3ep017. No preface preserved in source for this Sìkù běn entry.

The principal difference between the Sìkù recension and the longer hxwd recension is editorial scale: the imperial editors of the 1770s–1780s pruned the work to 36 juǎn and re-organised the categories, removing some cases altogether and condensing the editorial introductions to the syndrome-classes. The Wáng Mèngyīng 王孟英 = [[王士雄] mid-nineteenth-century edited version (the basis of most subsequent Qīng reprints, including those of the late-Qīng Yītǒng zhèngmài quánshū 醫統正脈全書 type) follows the longer pre-Sìkù recension.
