Jiāng Zézhī yīàn 江澤之醫案

Medical Case Records of Jiāng Zézhī by 江澤之 Jiāng Zézhī (late Qīng).

About the work

A single-juǎn casebook of the late-Qīng Jiāngnán physician Jiāng Zézhī. The text is preserved without preface or compiler-colophon in the 漢學文典 source; only the case-material is transmitted. Cases are arranged by syndrome, opening with 瘧疾 (intermittent fevers) and proceeding through 痢疾 (dysentery) and other internal-medicine categories.

Prefaces

No transmitted preface in the 漢學文典 source.

Abstract

Jiāng Zézhī’s biographical record is meagre. Internal evidence — vocabulary (子母瘧, 一甲煎, 募原), drug repertoire (柴胡, 黃芩, 半夏, 杏仁, 西洋參, 牡蠣, 鱉甲, 老米, 烏梅), and the framing of fúxié (伏邪, “lurking pathogen”) — places the work within the late-Qīng wēnbìng / fúqì school, in the lineage of Yè Tiānshì (葉桂) and Wáng Mèngyīng (王士雄). The frequent use of Xiǎo Cháihú jiā jiǎn (modified Lesser Bupleurum decoction) plus yījiǎ jiān (one-shell decoction) signals a Sòng-Yáo-school inflected clinical practice. The text was likely composed in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The casebook is meticulous about disease-mechanism reasoning (biànzhèng) and unusually clear in noting therapeutic intent — “speedy resolution then auspicious” (速解乃吉), “adjust harmonisation supporting the upright” (扶正和解) — which makes it pedagogically useful and suggests it may have been compiled for didactic purposes.
