About the work
A one-juǎn medical-doctrinal critique of the Sòng imperial pharmacy formulary Tàipíng huìmín héjì jú fāng 太平惠民和劑局方 (cf. KR3e0033) by the fourth of the JīnYuán Four Masters. The work is the doctrinal turning-point of the JīnYuán medical revolution: Zhū argues (i) that the Júfāng’s habit of supplying prescriptions without aetiological reasoning produces clinicians who mistake symptomatic match for true therapeutic match, and (ii) that the Júfāng’s heavy reliance on warming, drying, and fragrant-aromatic medicines (溫補、燥熱、香竄) is catastrophically wrong for the actual yīn-deficiency-fire clinical population of his time. The form is dialogic: Zhū’s disciples raise particular Júfāng prescriptions and Zhū analyses each in turn. The present digitised exemplar is from jicheng.tw, collating a 1583 金陵周氏仁壽堂 Míng-Wànlì cut against the Wényuāngé Sìkùquánshū text. Abstract
Composition window 1340–1358 reflects the late mature period of Zhū’s career; the work is not precisely datable within this window. Its doctrinal significance — turning post-Yuán Chinese medicine away from formulary-based clinical practice toward aetiology-grounded reasoning — and the long-running 張介賓 Zhāng Jièbīn-vs-Zhū Zhènhēng controversy that it provoked are treated at length in the canonical KR3e0061 entry; here it is noted only that the work’s classification under the yīhuà subdivision KR3eq in the modern Kanripo arrangement reflects the late inclusion of Zhū’s critique alongside Edo-Qīng yīhuà and yīlùn.
