About the work
A twenty-four-juǎn expanded recension of KR3er018 Dānxī xīnfǎ, in which Fāng Guǎng supplements the Chéng Chōng 1481 recension with extensive additional clinical material drawn from a wide range of late-Yuán and early-Míng physicians in the Dānxī lineage, together with Fāng’s own clinical commentary. The expansion roughly quadruples the original work’s bulk: where the standard Dānxī xīnfǎ presents each disease in compressed-aphoristic form, Fāng’s fùyú opens each topic out into a substantial clinical-doctrinal discussion drawing on Dài Sīgōng’s Zhèngzhì yàojué 證治要訣, Wáng Lún’s 王綸 Míngyī zázhù 明醫雜著, and other Míng Dān-xī-lineage works. The work’s principal contribution to Míng medical pedagogy is its synthetic treatment of the Dānxī tradition: by 1536 Fāng could survey the entire late-fifteenth-century Dānxī commentarial corpus and produce a single integrated reference. The Dānxī xīnfǎ fùyú circulated continuously through the Míng and Qīng and was particularly influential in Korea, where it was a standard reference in the Dōngyī bǎojiàn 東醫寶鑑 (Hŏ Chun, 1613).
Abstract
The hxwd _000.txt is essentially empty (header only, no preface or prefatorial paratext preserved). Internal evidence and external bibliographic notice (the work is dated Jiājìng 15 = 1536 in the standard Míng catalog records and in modern Chinese-medicine scholarship) bracket the composition to that year. Fāng Guǎng was a hereditary physician of Xiūníng 休寧 (Hīzhōu / Ānhuī); his Gūshí shānrén literary cover-name became associated with the work. The Míng Sīkù quánshū 四庫全書 zǒngmù 總目 records the work under the standard variant title Fùyú 附餘 (sub-title Dānxī xīnfǎ) and accepts the Fāng attribution and Jiājìng dating. Note: the modern Chinese Buddhist-text scholar 方廣錩 Fāng Guǎngchāng (b. 1948, Dūnhuáng manuscript specialist) is a homonymous twentieth-century figure not to be confused with the present mid-Míng physician.
The work is preserved in the Hǎiwài huíliú zhōngyī gǔjí cóngshū repatriation series in a Japanese edition. The fact that the hxwd _000.txt is empty — the BASEEDITION field reading “T” rather than “jc” (CBETA Taishō rather than the standard hxwd electronic-text source) is anomalous and suggests an editorial-collation issue in the source distribution; the body text is intact in _001.txt and following.
Translations and research
No substantial European-language translation of the Dān-xī xīn-fǎ fù-yú located.
