Yīxué yàozé 醫學要則

The Principles of Medical Learning by 沈懋言 Shěn Màoyán (Qīng-era physician, dates uncertain).

About the work

A four-juǎn mid-Qīng pedagogical primer in 24 則 (“principles”), composed in 1743 and first printed in Qiánlóng 59 / 1794. The work covers: (i) Nèijīng doctrinal principles; (ii) materia medica properties (běncǎo yàoxìng 本草藥性); (iii) pulse-diagnosis and channel-doctrine (màijīng jīngluò 脈經經絡); (iv) treatment of miscellaneous disorders (zábìng zhìfǎ 雜病治法). Each anthologizes selected citations from the Nèijīng and post-Hàn medical authors with the compiler’s interlinear annotations.

The work is a typical mid-Qīng didactic primer aimed at students entering medical practice. Later bibliographers have judged the arrangement uneven and the doctrinal emphasis diffuse — a characteristic limitation of the yàozé / yàoyán primer genre, which tended toward eclectic anthology rather than systematic exposition.

The author Shěn Màoyán 沈懋言 may be related to (but is distinct from) the Qián-lóng-era Shěn Màofā 沈懋發 (KR3er093 Kuàicán piān, c. 1777) — the two names share the Mào 懋 generation-character but the relationship is not securely established.

Abstract

The 1743 composition / 1794 print dating is from the Douban-recorded Qiánlóng 59 imprint (Qīng Qiánlóng wǔshíjiǔ nián Yīxué yàozé). The composition window of 1743–1794 is adopted here. Shěn Màoyán is poorly documented; not in CBDB.
