Plumb-Line for Pattern-and-Treatment — Cold Damage by 王肯堂 (撰)

About the work

The Shānghán zhǔnshéng 傷寒準繩 (“Plumb-Line for Cold-Damage”) is the Shānghán-treatise of 王肯堂 Wáng Kěntáng’s Zhèngzhì zhǔnshéng — 8 juàn (one per juàn in the original Wànlì print), completed in Wànlì 32 / jiǎchén (1604) together with the Yángyī zhǔnshéng. The work systematises the Hàn-era Shānghán lùn of Zhāng Zhòngjǐng in the framework of the post-Sòng commentarial tradition, with detailed treatment of the six-channel diagnostics, transmission patterns, the principal prescriptions and their modifications. It belongs to the late-Míng pre-revisionist phase of Shānghán scholarship: Wáng works from a relatively traditional acceptance of the received text-order of the Shānghán lùn, prior to the more thoroughgoing revisionist reorderings of 方有執 Fāng Yǒuzhí (Shānghán lùn tiáo biàn 傷寒論條辨, 1592–1593) and 喻昌 Yú Chāng (Shànglùn piān 尚論篇, 1648) that would dominate the Qīng Shānghán tradition culminating in the Yīzōng jīnjiàn (cf. KR3eu017).

Abstract

The Shānghán zhǔnshéng is one of the major late-Míng Shānghán monographs and one of the principal sources, alongside the Fāng Yǒuzhí revisionist programme, for the late-Míng / early-Qīng clinical reception of Zhāng Zhòngjǐng. Wáng’s organisation works by symptom-pattern (zhèng 證) and by channel rather than by a strict revisionist text-reordering, and his prescription-and-modification logic is detailed and conservative.
