Zhèngzhì zhāi yào 證治摘要
Selected Essentials of Pattern-and-Treatment by 中川成章 (撰)
About the work
The Zhèngzhì zhāi yào 證治摘要 (Japanese Shōchi tekiyō; “Selected Essentials of Pattern-and-Treatment”), 2 juàn, is a clinical handbook by the late-Edo kanpō physician 中川成章 Nakagawa Seishō 中川成章. The title deliberately echoes — at one remove — the framework of the major literate-physician clinical compendia of the late Míng (Wáng Kěntáng’s Zhèngzhì zhǔnshéng, KR3eu011) and Xuē Jǐ’s Nèikē zhāi yào (KR3eu003), distilling the clinical zhèngzhì 證治 (pattern-and-treatment) tradition into a concise practitioner’s reference suitable for Edo Japanese clinical use.
Abstract
The composition window is the second quarter of the 19th century, the period of Nakagawa’s mature practice. The work is one of many late-Edo private-publication kanpō clinical handbooks that distil the Chinese imperial-Qīng synthesis (Zhāng Jièbīn, the Yīzōng jīnjiàn, the Tamba philological tradition) for Japanese practitioner use. Its compact 2-juàn format and practical orientation place it in the same genre as 湯本求真 Yumoto Kyūshin’s later Kōyū dōshikaikō and the broader Edo-Meiji kanpō handbook tradition.
Substantial Western-language scholarship is not available; the work has been studied chiefly in modern Japanese kanpō historiography.
