Qízhèng fāng 奇正方

Formulas, Extraordinary and Regular by 賀谷壽 (撰)

About the work

The Qízhèng fāng 奇正方 (Japanese reading Kisei hō) is a late-Edo Japanese formulary attributed in the catalog meta to 賀谷壽 Kayano Ju 賀谷壽, a physician of the Ko-iho 古醫方 (Ancient-Formula School) tradition descended from 吉益爲則 Yoshimasu Tōdō 吉益東洞 (1702–1773). The work is independently catalogued in the hxwd series as KR3ed095 in the present knowledgebase, where it survives in the same header-only state.

Abstract

The Kanripo digital source for this text (KR3eu062_001.txt) is only the six-line file header — title, KR id, date stamp, BASEEDITION marker, and an empty JUAN line — with no preface or body text preserved. The parallel listing at KR3ed095 is in identical state. The catalog meta gives the author as 日本·賀谷壽 (“Japan-Kayano Ju”) and source hxwd, with no dynasty bracket.

The title term qízhèng 奇正 (“irregular and orthodox”) is borrowed from the Sūnzǐ bīngfǎ 孫子兵法 distinction between zhèngbīng (orthodox tactical formations) and qíbīng (extraordinary, surprise manoeuvres) and is one of 吉益爲則 Yoshimasu Tōdō’s signature theoretical devices for organising formulary practice in his school. In the Tōdō scheme, the zhèngfāng are Zhāng Zhòngjǐng’s canonical Shānghán / Jīnguì formulas, the qífāng are the extraordinary or supplementary prescriptions devised for the cases that the canonical formulas do not cover — a logical complement, not a doctrinal opposition. Kayano’s work title and Ko-iho-school affiliation place him squarely in the Tōdō lineage, plausibly in the mid-to-late Edo period (ca. 1750–1850); no tighter bracket is defensible without the actual text body.

Kayano Ju does not appear in the standard Edo medical biographical dictionaries (Nihon-i-shi 日本醫史, Kanpō no rinshō 漢方の臨牀 biographical indices) and is essentially known only from the title-line of this work and its inclusion in the Shanghai HuángHàn yīxué cóngshū 皇漢醫學叢書 (Shanghai: Shìjiè Shūjú, 1936) — the source of the hxwd-series text.

Note: the digital KR text being a header-only stub, the entry here is anchored on title, attributed author, and school-affiliation alone; no internal textual evidence is available.
