About the work

Hú Dǎn’s 1-juan practical astronomical handbook of 45 bright meridian-crossing stars, completed Kāngxī 8 (1669, jǐyǒu) at his Hángzhōu retirement. The work tabulates, for each of the 24 seasonal-nodes, the precise time at which each of 45 selected stars crosses the local zǐwǔ (south-meridian) line at the Beijing latitude — providing a portable handbook by which the observer can read off the time of night by identifying which star is currently transiting. The 45 stars comprise the 28 xiù 宿 (lunar-mansion) reference stars plus 17 additional bright objects added for completeness in spans where the 28 xiù alone would leave gaps: Dàjué 大角 (Arcturus), Guànsuǒ 貫索 (in Corona Borealis), Tiānshì 天市 and Dìzuò 帝座 (in Ophiuchus / Hercules), Zhīnǚ 織女 (Vega), Hégǔ 河鼓 (Altair), Tiānjīn 天津 (Deneb / Cygnus), Běiluò shīmén 北落師門 (Fomalhaut), Tǔsīkōng 土司空 (in Cetus), Tiānqūn 天囷, Wǔchē 五車 (Capella), the two shoulder-and-foot stars of Cān 參 (Orion), Tiānláng 天狼 (Sirius), NánHé 南河 (Procyon) and BěiHé 北河 (Pollux), Xuānyuán dàxīng 軒轅大星 (Regulus), and Tàiwēi Dìzuò 太微帝座 (in Virgo). All star positions are computed for the Beijing meridian, with an appended note on Zhèjiāng meridional adjustments.

The work is structurally a transitional document between the late-Míng Xīnfǎ suànshū (1635) and the Kāngxī-period Lǜlì yuānyuán (1724). It uses the 96- day system introduced by the Shíxiàn lì (1645) and adopts the 18°-below-horizon convention for huánghūn / mèishuǎng (twilight) that the post-Jesuit calendar had introduced. But it retains substantial Chinese-traditional elements (the 28 xiù as primary reference frame, the píngdù 平度 = 360° vs rìdù 日度 = 365.25° dual-degree convention) and supplies Chinese-style mnemonic techniques.

Respectfully examined: Zhōngxīng pǔ, 1 juàn, by Hú Dǎn of Our Dynasty. Dǎn’s hào was Lìzhāi 勵齋, [a man of] Rénhé. Wáng Zhuó’s 王晫 Jīnshì shuō 今世説 calls him “broadly mastering the various books, especially refined in the Tiānguānjiā discourse — solar-lunar eclipses, stellar positions, computation-and-prediction without the slightest omission. In Chángān [Beijing] he debated repeatedly with the Western specialists at the Bureau; the multitude all sighed in admiration”. His authored [works are]: Zhōngxīng pǔ, Zhōutiān xiànjiè tú, Bùtiān gē, [all] circulating in the world. Now the only [one] seen is this compilation.

The jīngxīng (longitudinal-stars) it fixes are 45 in number. Outside the 28 mansions [it] adds: Dàjué, Guànsuǒ, Tiānshì Dìzuò, Zhīnǚ, Hégǔ, Tiānjīn, Běiluò shīmén, Tǔsīkōng, Tiānqūn, Wǔchē, the Cānzuǒjiān (Orion’s left-shoulder), the Cānyòuzú (Orion’s right-foot), Tiānláng, NánHé, BěiHé, Xuānyuán dàxīng, Tàiwēi Dìzuò — and other 18 stars [making with the 28 mansions a total of 46; the 提要 says 45 — minor counting discrepancy, perhaps treating one of the duplicate Dìzuò as one entry]. [These he uses] in order to compare midday’s late-or-early, threading the various time-divisions. [He] heads with the [Beijing] capital, and appends Zhèjiāng. The remainder, by category one extends.

What he discusses of day-and-night length, cold-and-heat alternation, location-and-tendency-difference, and what he cites of classics-and-traditions and recorded-evidence — examining-and-fixing precession, dividing dawn-and-dusk — all are simple-and-clear, detailed-and-pertinent. With the present Yíxiàng kǎochéng meridian-crossing star-record, [it is] rather able to form an inner-and-outer.

Examining his self-preface: composed in Kāngxī 8 [1669]. Then this book [is] before the imperial-determined arithmetic-book [Lìxiàng kǎochéng 1724], after the former-Míng Xú Guāngqǐ’s Xīnfǎ suànshū. Preserving its degree-numbers in order to provide for collation-verification of the constant-stars’ precession motion — also not without aid.

Abstract

Composition: 1669 (Kāngxī 8, jǐyǒu), the year of the preface. Hú Dǎn composed the work in retirement at his native Rénhé (Hángzhōu) — apparently after returning from his Beijing period during which the Niǔ Xiù-recorded astronomical debates with the Verbiest-era Bureau staff took place. The Beijing-meridian basis of the star-positions reflects this Beijing experience; the appended Zhèjiāng adjustment reflects Hú Dǎn’s return to his native locality.

The work’s significance is principally institutional-and-pedagogical rather than methodologically innovative:

(a) It consolidates the post-Jesuit astronomical corpus into a portable working handbook for the Chinese amateur-observer audience, integrating the post-1645 Shíxiàn lì conventions (96-, 18°-twilight) with the traditional Chinese 28-mansion stellar reference frame. The result is one of the earlier accessible Chinese-language astronomical-and-time-keeping handbooks of the post-Jesuit era.

(b) It supplements the 28-mansion reference frame with 17 additional bright-star references — most of which are bright modern-recognized navigational stars (Arcturus, Vega, Altair, Sirius, etc.). The additions reflect the practical inadequacy of the 28 mansions alone for time-determination at fine resolution: many of the 28 xiù reference-stars are not the brightest objects in their region of the sky, and gaps in the celestial coverage of the 28 are conspicuous. Hú Dǎn’s selection of 17 supplements is essentially Western-influenced (the European astronomical tradition had long since organized celestial reference around bright stars), though he does not credit the Jesuit synthesis.

(c) The work’s tabular organization — by seasonal-node × star, with crossing-times to the precision of (15-minute intervals) and fēn (15ths of = 1-minute intervals) — establishes a model that subsequent Qīng popular astronomical handbooks would follow.

The 提要’s framing — placing the work between the Xīnfǎ suànshū (1635) and the Lǜlì yuānyuán (1724), and noting its complementary relation to the KR3f0020 Yíxiàng kǎochéng’s star catalog — locates the Zhōngxīng pǔ as a transitional bridge in the Chinese astronomical-bibliographic record. The 提要’s positive evaluation (“simple-and-clear, detailed-and-pertinent”) reflects the work’s pedagogical-utilitarian merit even as it acknowledges that the work is methodologically derivative rather than original.

Other points of interest

The 提要’s record of Hú Dǎn’s Beijing astronomical debates with the Verbiest-era Bureau staff — recorded in Wáng Zhuó’s Jīnshì shuō — is one of the few documented cases of substantive Chinese-vs-Jesuit astronomical confrontation outside the Yáng Guāngxiān 楊光先 anti-Jesuit prosecution of 1664. Unlike Yáng Guāngxiān’s polemical and ultimately ill-judged attack, Hú Dǎn’s engagement appears to have been technically substantive. The detail that “the multitude all sighed in admiration” suggests his arguments were taken seriously by the Bureau staff.

The work’s continued use of the older píngdù (360°) convention alongside the rìdù (365.25°) convention — explicitly justified by Hú Dǎn as enabling parallel-not-conflicting computation — is a clear example of the early-Kāngxī Chinese astronomical practice of maintaining bilingual conventions for different computational purposes. This bilingual-conventional posture would persist in Chinese astronomical handbooks well into the late Qīng.
