Zhì Yú jí 摯虞集

Collected Works of Zhi Yu (Reconstructed) by 摯虞 (撰)

About the work

A reconstructed collection (jíyìběn 輯佚本) of the literary writings of Zhì Yú 摯虞 (ca. 250–311 CE), Western Jìn 西晉 scholar, anthologist, and literary critic. Organized in two juǎn, the fragments are cited in the Wénxuǎn 文選 commentary and Tàipíng yùlǎn 太平御覽. Zhi Yu is best known as the compiler of the Wénzhāng liúbiélùn 文章流別論 (Discourse on the Varieties and Branches of Literature), the earliest systematic Chinese genre criticism, and the anthology Wénzhāng liúbiéjí 文章流別集 (Anthology of the Varieties of Literature). These works survive only in fragments.

Abstract

Zhì Yú 摯虞 (ca. 250–311 CE; Zhònglùn 仲倫; CBDB: not confirmed) was a Western Jìn scholar and official from Jīngzhào 京兆 Cháng’ān. He served as Tàichāng bó shì 太常博士 and in other scholarly offices. He died during the Yǒngjia Disaster 永嘉之亂 (311 CE), when the Xiōngnú sacked Luòyáng. His biography is in Jìnshū 晉書 juǎn 51. See 摯虞 for full biography.

His most important work is the Wénzhāng liúbiélùn 文章流別論, a systematic treatise on literary genre and literary history, and the companion anthology Wénzhāng liúbiéjí. These are the earliest extant comprehensive works of Chinese literary criticism. The Suíshū Jīngjízhì records a Zhì Yú jí 摯虞集 in eleven juǎn; fragments of the Liúbiélùn and literary writings survive in lèishū citations. Zhāng Pǔ 張溥 included a Zhì Zhònglùn jí 摯仲倫集 in the Hàn Wèi Liùcháo bǎisān jiā jí 漢魏六朝百三家集.
