Liú Xiàoyí jí 劉孝儀集

Collected Works of Liu Xiaoyi (Reconstructed) by 劉孝儀 (撰)

About the work

A reconstructed collection (jíyìběn 輯佚本) of the literary writings of Liú Xiàoyí 劉孝儀 (fl. ca. 510–549 CE; also written 劉孝義 Liú Xiàoyì), Liáng 梁 court poet and member of the prolific Liu literary clan. Organized in two juǎn, the fragments carry the first-person signature “長兼御史中丞劉孝儀稽首言” (line 1070 of the source file), confirming attribution. The Yuèfǔ shījí 樂府詩集 juǎn 32 and the Wànhuā gǔ 萬花谷 anthology (後卷 4 and 後卷 32) attribute multiple poems to “劉孝儀”; the Yìwén lèijù 藝文類聚 juǎn 59 cites one poem as “劉孝義” (a variant romanization). The collection appears at Shī jì 詩紀 juǎn 87.

Abstract

Liú Xiàoyí 劉孝儀 (fl. ca. 510–549 CE; CBDB: not confirmed) was a Liáng dynasty official and poet, member of the Péngchéng Liú 彭城劉 literary family. He was a younger brother of Liú Xiàochuò 劉孝綽 (KR4b0059) and Liú Xiàowēi 劉孝威. He served as Yùshǐ zhōngchéng 御史中丞 (Censor-in-Chief) during the Liang, as attested by his first-person official memorial. His biography is not separately preserved but he is mentioned in the Liángshū and Nán shǐ in the context of the Liu clan.

His poetic output is associated with the Palace Style (gōngtǐ 宮體) tradition shared by his brothers. Some poems attributed to him are also attributed to Liú Xiàochuò in other anthology sources — a common cross-attribution issue within this family’s corpus. The Guǎng hóng míng jí 廣弘明集 juǎn 30 preserves a piece confirming his Buddhist associations. Zhāng Pǔ 張溥 included a Liú Xiàoyí jí 劉孝儀集 in the Hàn Wèi Liùcháo bǎisān jiā jí 漢魏六朝百三家集.
