Abstract
Lú Sīdào 盧思道 (535–586 CE), zì Zǐxíng 子行, was a native of Zhuō 涿 in Fānyáng 范陽 (modern Zhuozhou, Hebei), from the prestigious Fānyáng Lú 范陽盧 clan — one of the great northern aristocratic lineages that dominated official culture in the Northern Dynasties and early Tang. He served successively under the Northern Qi 北齊, where he was recognized as a literary prodigy, and then the Sui dynasty. His biography is in Suíshū 隋書 juǎn 57 and Běishǐ 北史 juǎn 30.
His most famous poem is the 〈從軍行〉 (Cónɡjūn xíng, March to War), a vigorous frontier ballad that became a model for Tang frontier poetry. He also composed the 〈北齊興亡論〉 (Běi Qí xīngwáng lùn, Essay on the Rise and Fall of the Northern Qi), an important historical essay analyzing the political causes of the Northern Qi’s collapse. He was a skilled composer of lèifǔ 樂府 and palace-style verse in the tradition bridging Northern Qi and Sui courtly culture.
The standard dates for Lú Sīdào are 535–586 CE, placing his death during the reign of Emperor Wen of Sui 隋文帝 (r. 581–604); some sources suggest he may have died slightly later (ca. 586–601), but the Suíshū biography supports 586. The CBDB record 31534 lists him with dates 0/0; the dates 535–586 are adopted from Suíshū and standard reference works. Zhāng Pǔ 張溥 compiled this reconstruction for the Hàn Wèi Liùcháo bǎisān jiā jí 漢魏六朝百三家集. Wilkinson’s Chinese History: A New Manual does not include a dedicated entry for Lú Sīdào.
