Abstract

Yīng Yáng 應瑒 (?–217 CE; Délián 德璉; CBDB id 511324) was a native of Rǔnán 汝南 (modern Henan). He came from the distinguished Yīng 應 family of Rǔnán, which had produced several renowned scholars. He served as an aide (cóngshì 從事) under Cáo Pī 曹丕 and was closely associated with the literary circles centered on the Cáo family. Cáo Pī’s 〈與吳質書〉 (Letter to Wu Zhi) eulogizes Ying Yang after his death, noting his graceful literary style: “Délián had a broad compass and diligent application, and his pen never stopped moving.” He died in the epidemic of 217 CE that devastated the Seven Masters. His biography is noted in the Sān guó zhì (Wèishū, juǎn 21). See 應瑒 for full biography.

Ying Yang is the least extensively documented of the Seven Masters, with only a small body of verse surviving through citations. Cáo Pī’s tribute letter and the Diǎnlùn 典論 provide the primary contemporary testimony for his literary accomplishment. The Suíshū Jīngjí zhì records a collected works in one juǎn (lost). Zhāng Pǔ assembled the present reconstruction from Shī jì, Lèi jù, and related encyclopaedic sources. The standard reconstruction of his verse is in Lù Qīnlì 逯欽立’s Xiān-Qín Hàn Wèi Jìn Nánběicháo shī 先秦漢魏晉南北朝詩 (Zhōnghuá, 1983).
