Dàyǐn jūshì shījí 大隱居士詩集
Great-Recluse Poetry Collection by 鄧深 (撰)
About the work
Dàyǐn jūshì shījí 大隱居士詩集 in 2 juǎn is the surviving poetic collection of Dèng Shēn 鄧深 (fl. 1140s–1170s), Sòng Tóngchuān cáo and Maritime Trade Commissioner of Guǎngxī. The title takes Dèng’s hào Dàyǐn 大隱. Reconstituted entirely from the Yǒnglè dàdiǎn by the Sìkù editors. The original-attribution in Yǒnglè dàdiǎn was Dèng Shēnbó jí — without specifying a name or period; the Sìkù editors’ reconstruction of authorship from internal evidence (place-names, zì-references, hào-references) and external evidence (Gǔ Luó zhì, Wànxìng tōngpǔ) is exemplary philology. Dèng’s father-and-mother loved-the-classics so deeply that the prose collection — recorded in Gǔ Luó zhì as 10 juǎn — is otherwise entirely lost.
Tiyao
Dàyǐn jūshì shījí in 2 juǎn. Examining: the Dàyǐn jūshì jí’s Yǒnglè dàdiǎn original-title is Dèng Shēnbó jí. Those-scattered-and-visible in the various yùn — gathered-and-arranged — still 2 juǎn. But the original-version did-not give his name, did-not give his time. Various-scholars’ catalogs all did-not record this book.
Only the collection has Yóu Luó Zhèngzhòng qìngzhǎo fēnyùn shī — title says Shēn dé yīzì; the Zhūrén jí Pínlèxuān shǎnghuā fēnyùn shī — title says Shēn dé bǎzì — then his name should-be Dèng Shēn.
Examining the Yǒnglè dàdiǎn under the Dèng word yùn — citing the Gǔ Luó zhì says: Sòng Dèng Shēn, zì Zīdào, tested Jiàoguān; entered as Tàifǔ chéng; in lúnduì discussed Jīngxī, Húnánběi household-and-scholar-officials’ folkways — Gāozōng accepted-and-praised. Tíjǔ Guǎngxī shìbó, for-aged-parents requested convenient-prefecture; Zhī Héngzhōu — at Chálíng, Ānrén, the Xīdòng zhī dào (mountain-valley bandits) on-hearing-of-his-name tiēxī. Promoted to Tóngchuān cáo; yánjiǔ xūé jiǔ wéi mín hài; qǐng yú cháo, juān Chuānyǐn 47-wàn (the salt-and-wine false-quotas long-pained the people; petitioned the court, remitting the Sìchuān yǐn 470,000); supervisors and county-magistrates tānnüè (greedy-cruel) — impeached. Yú Yǔnwén wrote-letter saying: bùwèi qiángyù; sījì sīmín; tǐngrán zhī cāo, wèijiàn jìnbǐ. Later with Cháoqǐng dàfū ended at home. Loved-residing at the eastern-lake’s shèng (scenic spot); built pavilion called Míngxiù; had wénjí in 10 juǎn. Líng Dízhī’s Wànxìng tōngpǔ also records *Dèng Shēn, Xiāngyīn person, Shàoxīng-period jìnshì; remainder same as Gǔ Luó zhì.
The collection has village-people praying-for-rain-with-response-time visiting Wūshí; further chants the Lǐquán, titled Yánshí, mountain-stone, drum, presented-to Ráo Sīlǐ, parted-from-Cháng-shā-yì, ferried-across the Yùxū dòng — these places are all close-to Héngzhōu. Sùxiá sānyóudòng, Xiájiāng yànyù duī — these places also all close-to Tóngchuān. With [Dèng] Shēn’s office-tour yīyī xiāngfú (one-by-one matching) — then this collection composed by Dèng Shēn — verified.
Only Shēnbó’s zì — different from what the Gǔ Luó zhì records — surely had-two zì. Huáng Yújì’s Qiānqǐngtáng shūmù records there’s a Yuán Dèng Dàyǐn jūshì shījí. The collection’s Dá shèyǒu shī has line “xiǎoxuān míng Dàyǐn” (small-pavilion called Great-Recluse); further has Zìfù Dàyǐn yīlǜ (one regulated-poem self-composing the Great-Recluse) — matches it. But examining its poetry-line and headings, really a Sòng-person, not a Yuán-person. Suspect Dàyǐn is [Dèng] Shēn’s biéhào — hence the collection accordingly named-thus. Yújì etc. by transmission-and-transcription, erred Sòng as Yuán.
Today specifically based-on-this — re-titling the collection name; while time-period still followed-from Gǔ Luó zhì — placed in Sòng. Respectfully collated, Qiánlóng 46 (1781), 12th month.
Abstract
The Dàyǐn jūshì shījí in 2 juǎn is a Yǒnglè dàdiǎn-recovered collection whose authorship and dynastic-attribution were both initially uncertain. The Sìkù editors’ multi-pronged philological reconstruction — drawing on internal zì-tags (the fēnyùn poems whose yùn is the Shēn character — proof of name); on internal place-names (Wūshí, Lǐquán, Chángshā, Xiájiāng — proof of itinerary); on external evidence (Gǔ Luó zhì, Wànxìng tōngpǔ) — establishes Dèng Shēn as the author and the Sòng Shàoxīng–Qiándào period as the date-bracket. Huáng Yújì’s Qiānqǐngtáng shūmù’s erroneous Yuán-attribution is corrected.
The collection is a record of Dèng’s regional-administrative tour: Héngzhōu Prefect (Húnán), then Tóngchuān (Sìchuān). The Yú Yǔnwén commendation — bùwèi qiángyù; sījì sīmín; tǐngrán zhī cāo — preserved by the Gǔ Luó zhì, places Dèng among the qīngzhèng (clean-and-just) provincial officials of the Xiàozōng period.
CBDB has no clearly-matching entry; lifedates are not preserved.

Other points of interest
- The Sìkù editors’ philological reconstruction of authorship, zì, hào, dynasty, and itinerary from a fragmentary Yǒnglè dàdiǎn collection is one of the more methodologically-interesting cases in the jíbù biéjí tíyào series.
- Distinguish from the very-different Dàyǐn jí KR4d0166 by Lǐ Zhèngmín (also titled with Dàyǐn).
