Chúnbáizhāi lèigǎo 純白齋類稿
The Chún-bái-zhāi (Pure-White Studio) Classified Drafts by 胡助 (撰)
About the work
A 20-juǎn + 2 juǎn fùlù truncated recension of Hú Zhù 胡助 (b. 1278), originally 30 juǎn self-edited; lost in transmission for two centuries; re-assembled from scattered fragments by his sixth-generation descendant Hú Huái 胡淮 in mid-Zhèng-dé. The present recension preserves 1 juǎn fù + 16 juǎn shī + 3 juǎn záwén + 2 juǎn fùlù (contemporary zèng verse to Hú). Yú Jí’s bá on the Shàngjīng jìxíng jí and Dèng Wényuán / Wú Chéng’s bá on Luánpō xiǎolù and Shēng xué jìqì wén are documented in the Sìkù tíyào as lost — their pieces presumably among the 10 juǎn dropped from the original.
Tiyao
Chúnbáizhāi lèigǎo, 20 juǎn + 2 juǎn fùlù. By Hú Zhù of the Yuán. Zhù zì Lǚxìn, yīzì Gǔyú. Native of Wūzhōu Dōngyáng. Initially raised by Màocái; Jiànkānglù rúxué xuélù; through Měihuà shūyuàn shānzhǎng, Wēnzhōulù rúxué jiàoshòu; by second recommendation again Hànlín Guóshǐyuàn biānxiūguān; retired with Chéngxìnláng, Tàicháng bóshì. The time was Zhìzhèng 5 (1345). This collection is what Zhù himself edited — originally 30 juǎn. Years long, cánquē shīcì (incomplete and out-of-order). In Míng Zhèngdé, his 6th-gen. descendant Huái gathered the scattered, re-edited it — only fù 1 juǎn, shī 16 juǎn, záwén 3 juǎn + fùlù 2 juǎn of contemporary zèng verse, retaining the Chúnbáizhāi lèigǎo title — juǎn count reduced by 1/3, no longer the original. Yú Jí once bá his Shàngjīng jìxíng jí — said his Lóngmén yǐhòu shī yóu jiā; jīn yǐ sàn rù jí zhōng. Dèng Wényuán and Wú Chéng each bá his Luánpō xiǎolù and Shēng xué jìqì wén — cǐ běn bùzǎi — must be in the lost 10 juǎn. Hú Zhù’s shīwén are píngyì jìnrén, no shēnzhàn qíjǐng (deep, soak-deep, strange-and-alert) thinking; but also no zhīlí pòsuì (fragmentation and breakage) defect. Probably not lost as zhōngshēng (middle voice). Wú Chéng characterized his verse as: “chūnlán zhuóyá — xiàzhú hántuò — lùzī yǔxǐ zhī yú — zhuózhuó yōumèi — juānjuān jìnghǎo” — xíngróng guòdāng (over-stating the description) — fǎn bù xiào qí pǐngé (instead, doesn’t match his pǐngé). Respectfully collated.
Abstract
Chúnbáizhāi lèigǎo preserves the principal corpus of a Wūzhōu literary figure of the same Dōngyáng circle as the Jīnhuá sìxiānshēng. Hú is now best known for his preface to Wú Lái 吳萊’s Yuānyǐng jí, supplying the “dūlùn” line on qiǎnlòu vs. hóngbó. The collection’s progressive truncation (30 → 20 + 2 juǎn; 1/3 reduction during Zhèng-dé-era HúHuái re-edit) is a typical case of YuánMíng small-author transmission decay. Composition window: from Hú’s earliest preserved compositions (post-c. 1310) to his Zhìzhèng 5 (1345) retirement.
