Guīfēng jí 圭峯集

The Guī-fēng (Jade-Tablet Peak) Collection by 盧琦 (撰)

About the work

A 2-juǎn restored recension of Lú Qí 盧琦 (d. 1362), the HuìānFújiàn liánglì poet-administrator. The textual situation is one of the more dramatic in the Sìkùguǎn’s late-Yuán biéjí repertory: the Wànlì Chén Chéngzhōng edition (preceded by the more recent ZhuāngHùbù Huìān edition) had folded 60+ pieces from Sàdūlā 薩都拉’s Yànmén jí KR4d0514 into Lú Qí’s collection — including, most flagrantly, Sà’s Xīxíng zhōngqiū wányuè (whose self-preface explicitly names “yú nǎi Sàshì zǐ” — “I am of the Sà family”) — re-titled in the corrupted Lú edition as “rú yǒu Sàshì zǐ” with the “Zhìyuán dīngchǒu (1337) mid-autumn” colophon deliberately deleted. The Sìkùguǎn deleted 32 such confirmed misattributions and restored the authentic 2-juǎn LúQí corpus. The collection also contains 3 , 6 , 2 zhìmíng, 1 jìwén, 3 , 9 zázhù — these quèguān Lú zhī zhēnzuò (definitely-genuine Lú-authentic compositions).

Tiyao

Guīfēng jí, 2 juǎn. By Lú Qí of the Yuán. Qí Xīhán, hào Lìzhāi. Native of Huìān. Guīfēng is where he lived. The hand-copy version writes Guīzhāi jí — a transmission error. Zhìzhèng 2 (1342) [appointed] Dàxiàozhōu lùshì; transferred Yǒngchūn xiànyǐn; reassigned Níngdé; through Cáosī tíjǔ; appointed Píngyángzhōu — order came down but he died. Career fully in Yuánshǐ liánglì zhuàn. Xú Yúzǐ’s 徐𤊹 Bǐjīng says: “Guīfēng jí — long not transmitted; recently Huìān ZhuāngHùbù Zhēngfǔ gathered and printed it.” This version is by Chén Chéngzhōng of the Yuán; Míng Wànlì early, town-fellows Zhū Yīlóng of Huìān and Dǒng Yìngjǔ of Fúzhōu prefaced and printed it — preceding the Zhuāng version. But it had already many alien pieces folded in: wǔyán gǔshī Chūnrì sī yuǎnyóu is in Chén Lǚ’s collection KR4d0516; wǔyán gǔ Guòlǐng zhì Chóngān, Sòng Wú Fǔ zhì Yángzhōu, Tí Jiāoshān fāngzhàng bì, Qiūrì chíshàng dù Mǐnguān sù Táishānsì juédǐng zǎofā Huánghé etc.; qīyán gǔ Yǒu shì jū Yōngguān zǒubǐ zèng Mèng Lǐ Yuèlíngtái wàngyuè yèbó Diàotái Jiāngnán lè Jiāngnán yuàn Xuěshān cí Cuī Zhèn zǔ fēng Yóu Wúshān Tuófēng Zǐyángān Jiāngshàng wén dí Biéyǒu Hányè wén dí Àndàntān gē Qīnghú qū Hǎitáng qū Rú yǒu Sàshì zǐ etc.; qīyán lǜshī Gāoyóu chénglóu wǎnwàng Yān jiāngjūn chūliè jì Hèlín chánglǎo Hé Wáng Wéi xuéhǎi nánhuán yùn Sānqú shǒu suǒ tí Lànkē shíqiáo Dēng Zhènyáng Lóngxīngsì gé jì cānzhèng Xǔ Kěyòng Sòng qiānxiàn Wáng Jūnshí Jīnlíng dàozhōng zàiguò Zhōngshān Wànshòusì etc. — total 32 — all in Sàdūlā 薩都拉’s collection. As to Sàdūlā’s Xīxíng zhōngqiū wányuè — self-preface “yú nǎi Sàshì zǐ” etc. — bānbān kě kǎo. This collection re-titled it “Rú yǒu Sàshì zǐ”; the preface-end “Zhìyuán dīngchǒu (1337) mid-autumn writing” cut off — particularly displaying zuòwěi (deliberate forgery) — cannot be called accidental misattribution. Probably at compilation time, to inflate juǎnzhì and to kuā (boast) wide search, hence the zhēnyàn hùnxiáo mix-up. Qí’s office was not high, but among liánglì, kě bùjiè shī ér chuán (need not depend on verse to transmit). Even on poetic grounds, his qīngcí yǎyùn (clear-words, elegant rhymes) — also not below Chén Lǚ and Sàdūlā. The editor yí jiǎ wéi yǐ (taking jiǎ for ) — also not without cause. The collection also has 3 , 6 , 2 zhìmíng, 1 jìwén, 3 , 9 zázhùquèguān Qí zuò, not by jiǎjiè. Now we delete the falsely-recorded verse, combine with the prose — to preserve Qí’s genuine work. Respectfully collated.

Abstract

The Guīfēng jí is one of the principal textual-recovery feats of the Sìkùguǎn in the Yuán biéjí division — the systematic deletion of 32 confirmed Sàdūlā misattributions, with the tíyào itself providing the detailed list of titles deleted. The Xīxíng zhōngqiū wányuè deliberate-deletion of “Sàshì zǐ” → “Sàshì zǐ” (with date-colophon erased) is the Sìkù tíyào’s fǎyī exemplar of late-Míng Fújiàn zuòwěi. The textually-clean LúQí corpus (verse + 3 + 6 + 2 zhìmíng + others) is the principal monument of one of the Yuánshǐ liánglì. Composition window: 1342 (jìnshì) to 1362 (death before taking up Píngyángzhōu).

Other points of interest

The Lú Qí / Sàdūlā misattribution case is one of the standard textbook cases in Chinese textual studies on the dangers of late-Míng huìzǐ (regional re-printing) practice without source-attribution discipline.
