Dàtóng Jìshì 大同紀事
Record of Events at Datong by 韓邦奇
About the work
A brief narrative account of the Jiājìng jiǎshēn 嘉靖甲申 (1524) mutiny at Dàtóng 大同 (in northern Shanxi), written by 韓邦奇 Hán Bāngqí (1479–1555; CBDB id 34652), a mid-Míng official and Confucian scholar. The text opens with the preface phrase: “Jiājìng jiǎshēn Dàtóng zhī biàn, Dūyùshǐ Zhāng Wénjǐn xúnfǔ dìfāng” 嘉靖甲申大同之變,都禦史張文錦巡撫地方 — establishing that the account concerns the Dàtóng mutiny that occurred while the Surveillance Commissioner Zhāng Wénjǐn 張文錦 was serving as Provincial Governor (xúnfǔ 巡撫). Hán Bāngqí appears to have had direct knowledge of these events through his official career.

Abstract
韓邦奇 Hán Bāngqí (1479–1555; CBDB id 34652; see 韓邦奇 person note) was a jìnshì of 1502, serving in a series of provincial and central government posts including eventually Minister of War at Nánjīng. His scholarly work primarily concerns the Yì (Book of Changes), music theory, and mathematics.
The Dàtóng Jìshì is a minor work recording specific events during the Dàtóng garrison mutiny (Dàtóng biàn 大同變) of the Jiājìng jiǎshēn year (1524). The Dàtóng garrison area (Dàtóng wèi 大同衛) was a strategically critical military zone on the northern frontier, and mutinies and factional disputes among the garrison soldiers were a recurring problem in the mid-Míng. The account’s value is as a firsthand or near-contemporary record of these frontier military events, which are otherwise only summarily treated in official history.
CBDB notes (id 34652): “MS, 201.5317-5319” for the Míng shǐ biography; death year also given as Jiājìng 36 (1557) in some sources per the Academia Sinica note.
