Huānxǐ Yuānjiā

About the work

A twelve-chapter late-Míng vernacular short-story collection by 西湖漁隱主人 Xīhú Yúyǐn Zhǔrén (pen name, identity unknown), probably compiled in the late Chóngzhēn era or early Qīng (ca. 1640–1660). The title translates roughly as “Joyful [and Painful] Adversaries” or “Joyful Karmic Entanglements” — yuānjiā 冤家 meaning “adversary,” “nemesis,” or colloquially (in the context of love stories) “beloved enemy.” The twelve stories each concern entanglements of love, revenge, lust, and karmic retribution in a late-Míng urban setting.

The table of contents lists the twelve chapters:

(Hua Erniang’s cleverness recognizes her beloved)
(Wu Qianli’s love union across two lifetimes)
(Li Yuexian sacrifices her love to save her husband) 4–12. (further chapters involving monks, swindlers, lecherous officials, and romantic entanglements)

Abstract

Xīhú Yúyǐn Zhǔrén (“The Recluse-Fisherman of West Lake”) is an unidentified late-Míng pen name. The preface and context of the text suggest Hangzhou or the Jiangnan region. The Huānxǐ Yuānjiā belongs to the tradition of late-Míng huàběn short-story collections, drawing on the formula established by Féng Mènglóng’s 馮夢龍 Sānyán 三言 and Líng Mèngchū’s 淩濛初 Erpai 二拍, but representing a slightly later, sometimes racier variant of the genre. Its twelve stories combine romantic comedy, supernatural retribution, and moral-didactic framing typical of the period.

The work is classified under the Míng dynasty in the catalog, though given the late-Chóngzhēn or early Qīng date of composition, some scholars place it in the transitional period.
