About the work

Guósè Tiānxiāng 國色天香 is a late-Míng anthology of vernacular short fiction (huàběn 話本 and chuánqí 傳奇) compiled by Wú Jìngsuǒ 吳敬所. The title derives from the conventional phrase praising a consummate beauty or the finest of flowers (applied originally to peonies in a Tang poem by Lǐ Zhèngfēng 李正封: “天香夜染衣,國色朝酣酒”). The anthology assembles ten juan of stories under thematic groupings, ranging from romance and adventure to the supernatural and moral exemplar tales. Its preface, signed by one Xiè Yǒukě 謝友可 of Zǐshān 紫山, dated Wànlì dīnghài 萬曆丁亥 (1587), explains that the compiler Wú Jìngsuǒ (style name Yǎngchún 養純) was dissatisfied with the disorder and miscellaneous quality of existing story collections and therefore carefully selected only the finest pieces for this compilation, attesting to the editorial ambition behind the work.

Abstract

Guósè Tiānxiāng 國色天香 is one of the landmark late-Míng vernacular fiction anthologies, compiled by Wú Jìngsuǒ 吳敬所 (also known as Yǎngchún 養純) and preface-dated 1587 (Wànlì 15, dīnghài). The preface by Xiè Yǒukě 謝友可, written at the Wànchìlóu 萬卷樓 on the ninth day of summer of that year, frames the collection as a discerning selection from the rich pool of current story literature, aimed at readers who can appreciate fine workmanship rather than mere quantity. The compiler’s pen name Yǎngchún 養純 (“nurturing purity”) signals a literary-aesthetic orientation.

The anthology comprises ten juan containing a mixture of shorter and longer vernacular narratives. Notable individual items identified in the table of contents include the Lóng Huì Lán Chí Lù 龍會蘭池錄, Liú Shēng Mì Lián Jì 劉生覓蓮記, Bái Jǐn Qióngnú Jiāhuì Yù 白錦瓊奇會遇, Jīn Lán Sìyǒu Zhuàn 金蘭四友傳, and Zhōng Qíng Lì Jí 鍾情麗集, among others. The collection spans romance, friendship, moral tales, and chuánqí-style supernatural fiction.

Guósè Tiānxiāng circulated widely in the Wànlì period and was reprinted in the Qīng. It belongs to the same editorial tradition as other late-Míng commercial anthologies such as Qíngsǐ 情史 and the Sānyán 三言 collections, reflecting the flourishing market for printed vernacular fiction in the Jiāngnán commercial centers. The author/compiler Wú Jìngsuǒ is otherwise little documented; the CBDB database contains no entry for him, and he is known primarily through this anthology. The Kanripo copy appears to represent a Qīng-dynasty reprint of the Míng original.
